It's nice when you get a good deal from someone you like/respect. It's worth building some sort of contact with sellers especially when you know they often sell what you like to buy. A few friendly messages back and forth instead of just a bid may leave the seller with a good impression and they will remember you. I have won auctions in the past and then made "deals" on other listed items with sellers I have purchased before.
Personally though, I find I loose out too often when placing bids too early. I also forget to bid a lot of times, so I miss out due to my own practices, but impulsive bidders always seem to beat me out. Snipers don't bother me, as at least they decide on a max amount and throw it in, all be it with a few seconds left. Impulsive bidders however, keep jacking up my bid, so I wait it out most of the time.
Your early bid paid off though.

I put in what i thought was a good bid on a htf model only to loose it even after raising the bid at the end
the winner eventually ran my original bid up after 10 attempts and out bid me
I feel I would have had more luck if i'd left bidding to the end and not alerting them to my interest,
this worked against the same bidder in earlier auctions allowing me to win them at a price nearer their true value and not the inflated 3 figure prices they are driving them up to

I´m a sniper and i use bid-o-matic. It keeps me away from paying premiums over my limit. When i started my ebay carreer, i often found me sitting excited and bidding again and again. Not only against other interested people, but also against "good friends" of the seller. A sniper bids whenever the auction ends, even if i´m not at home or maybe in bed. Of course therefore the computer has to be online all day and night, but as i run an ebay-shop, its running anyway.

Its that excitement that leads bidders to try one more dollar. Then, your bid is out bid. The best way to combat those impulsive bids is to hold off as long as you can, just like sniping.
I have never used sniper services. How much do they cost?
