A very nice find good for you Dan, I had seen these items but like many collectors who already have certain models they just pass them by.

But you got it at a good price, when I got my one I got it in a swop with a model that only owed me $15.00 I could not beleave my luck.

Mind you this was a few years ago things have changed since then.

Nice duo,George. As I was checking my castings against Dan's finds and studying the code timelines, I'm struck again by the placement of the GPW codes further in the timeline instead of at the top of the list. Was it intentional by Lesney to insert the GPW models later after the model started with BPW or was it a time of assembly decision to use up old GPW stock or because they ran out of BPW? This occurred with several other castings (Dans 20c Chevrolet Taxi for one). Just curious what the prevailing wisdom is. I am sure it has been discussed before but could not find the thread. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

they did the same to the #16 snow plough...GPW nearthe end of the run...either just left over GPWs or the y ran out of BPWs

It is a fact that the fine tread grey wheels (with 36 or 45 treads) were produced well after their black counterparts with the same tread patterns had been introduced. This was therefore not a case of using up old stock.

There are some models on which those fine tread grey wheels are common - for example 23c (9x36), 74a (9x36), 65b (10x36), 69a (10x36), 34b (11x45) and 13c (11.5x45). All of those are later issues of older models which had had grey wheels with knobby treads (20 or 24) in earlier years.

I assume that those wheels were primarily made for those models which were intended to keep the same wheel colour as before, and that they just happened to be used on other models occasionally. That is basically no different from what also happened with black or any other wheels.

The only correction I may point out is that the term "Common" for this Great list of GPW models listed is not quite true in the U.S. These Fine GPW wheels raise the value quite a bit, and are quite rare to find on both the #69 Van and the #13 Wrecker. These two in particular were/are real tough to find here in the U.S. and were not commonly found in our stores. The 45 Ford Corsair 9X36 GPW (more common for us), the not so common 12B Land Rover, and also the quite rare #57 with 11X45 GPW were not listed above, but they also were mid production releases on these 3 Lesney models. The use of these Fine GPW when more realistic black ones were already used and available has always puzzled me. They make locating them fun for we collectors, but they have/had no logical explanation for their use. kwakers
