...which explains the shape. However, with the eye of faith, the decal can also be seen to show circular valve handles and gauges (which you might expect on the back of a tanker).

I think you are right that there should be more than one decalless variation been shipped over in the former 'East' Germany, Idris. But it will be very difficult to prove this, as we all know that it is not a big deal removing decals without any traces.
But I will pay heed to this here in Germany.

On reflection, I suppose that statement of mine does sound a bit odd. certainly other models without decals/labels would be classified as error pieces and be sold at a reduced price. However, since these tankers were special order for the DDR, then you might expect a (small) premium to be charged if sold with provenance.

I better get my Microscale solution out and start removing decals

Personally I don't think that it would have made sense for the East German authority offices to let a different decal be added to the blank models - actually it would have been too much work for what reason?

The missing decal would not add any value to the model - some collectors might even tend to point out that "the decal is missing", so the model is not worth as much as one with a decal when offered for sale, but that's wrong.
it is "just another" variation - like the first version of the No. 52a Maserati with no racing numbers.
