Most of them have some useable parts. I break down the models you describe and save the following:
Axles (saved by length in parts trays).
Wheels, hubs and tires (saved by size in parts bins).
Bases, interiors and window units (also saved in organized bins).
Certain body parts are good for customs and those also get saved.

The parts that are broken (like windows, wheels, interiors, etc.) gets thrown out along with the bodies that have no restoration value. Zymack does have some scrap value, but it usually goes into the pot metal catagory and isn't worth the waste of space to save up enough to make a trip the the recycle people so it goes in the trash too. If you can't throw this stuff out you become a hoarder and that's a completly different problem and a road I don't want to travel.

Tinman is always accepting models from those who can't throw them away, but have no use for them. He will even pay for some specific beaters.

Concerning play worn models let me tell you all a story.

Everyone is looking out for new models. A few years ago I went togehter with my mam and girlfriend to a big second hand market.
Every collector, every seller that where looking for models of matchbox have been on the market from 10 o'clock in the morning.
I told my mam that if i'm Lucky there was one vitrine left that has maybey a few models left. Around 2'clock in the afternoon, after
seeing not one model I found one 8 wheel crane turqouise for 1 euro that wasn't mint but fairly good.

My point everyone want new models. A true collector buy's everything if the price is right.
I'm bying frquently a lot second hand models that something gives me a new variation.
I Always keep them aside and when I have lot's of time I put a model on the tabel and look with great concentration for a detail
that nobody has find yet. Just happened here concerning the alvis stewart, in the lot I just bought there was one in the box.
Have lot of boxes with beaters but time will tell if in the near feature if there is another variation that I have overlooked.
In the topic new models I just find the super gt 19/20 that has so far a minimum of 4 different bases. Just need the time to
find all my models of this model to find more variations of the base.
I'm trying to say : a play worn or beater can give you a lot of satisfaction of learning and finding new variations.
Also are these models very handy if someone else comes to visite to you to swap a few models.

A very good question from Dan ("Brad").

Any beaters or breakers I have, are thoroughly checked, over and over to make sure they are recorded variations on my lists and they are marked as 'Dupes' (duplicate), and quite often they are taken out of a box and checked again Months later, in case I have missed something (and it does happen).

Even models that have been broken open to study the tooling numbers on castings are still kept and placed together in a bag or small box, nothing gets thrown away (so yes Joe, I am a one of those hoarders...!).

I think Dan you could take something from each members suggestion so far and make use of it for your own benefit.

Mine end up in boxes that get pulled out and gone through when I'm a bit bored
I would say we're all hoarders isn't that what the rest of society call collectors!!!

so true ghosty...some fine points made by everyone...jp mentioning hoarding...i guess its a little of that...but i find i get anxiety if i have too much clutter...and i had close to 1000 new hot wheels...i know they are a nono to talk about  but i found i was getting overwhelmed with them and i was running out of room...well i have room but i dont want boxes and bins in my open areas...especially the basement...i workout there and build stuff there if i have to make something or repair it...so once i get to a certain point i have to make room or get rid of stuff...like the hot wheels...i gave at least 700 to toys for tots over a couple of years

but as far and the beaters and play worn models...i dont have so many that its taking over my house...as long as i have a place for them and they dont clutter the area im ok with that...so im not your classic hoarder i guess

one thing i get nervous about is getting rid of a model(s) to read someone found a new variation and it maybe one i got rid of...but thats mental...and i cant help that
Please use a web hosting site (like photobucket) to store pictures so you can post them here, using attachments makes it hard to view the pictures when you have to scroll to see them. Seeing comparisons of models is hard to see with attachments too.

Hi Dan, yes, my feeling as well, that the One 'Beater' you give away will be the casting variation you was looking for but failed to notice, while in your ownership...!

As regards 'Hot Wheels' not being spoken around this forum well, if it were not for the Matchbox models being played with by staff Children at 'MATTEL' in the first place, and somebody realising the models were not going very far when pushed, we would not have 'Hot Wheels', so I think we can allow some talk of and about them on the forum...
