Is that a label, a decal or a tampo print on the door?

Looking at the Black roof it looks just like a piece of sticky tape, as it is not smooth as if it were painted. If you look at is close you can see the ripples in it, making it uneven or smooth.

Yes, odd isn't it? The door label/decal/tampo looks to be neatly and professionally done, and then the model is spolied by the addition of a piece of badly-applied black tape to the roof. (Perhaps the corrugated appearance is the result of aging and it actually started off smooth?)

I have to agree the application of the black is or badly done as regards the door text i am unable clarify whether it is
a decal or transfer because as you say it has been applied so well and carefully.
Idid see another example at stafford toyfair about a year ago but the seller was not about at the time so was unable to
ask for any info

nickjones wrote:I don't think the model was given the code 3 treatment in Japan, It would be like us in the UK having a model of a datsun with "Japanese car club" tampos but written in Japanese.
Also the slots in the wheels are the larger type found on the early superfasts, The Japanese issue was a late issue so it should have the smaller slots.
I think the model and box have been paired up and did not originally come like this,
No matter though, the box and the model are both quite desirable so nothing is lost.
I agree that back in 1979 -80 when this was made few Japanese would be able to read western alphabet so would logically have printed this in Japanese. This would have been made for a car club in a country where they spoke english as a 1st or 2nd language and the models themselves either came from Lesney UK (maybe for Holland) or Japanese wholesaler (strong connections to Hong Kong and Singapore - I wonder if this toy came from either country?? ) What country did leonty24 find this in??? There were not many serious VW clubs back in 1980 that would shell out for customising this model!
As for the roof, careful examination of the edges of the black sticker should show if it has been hand cut (home made) or stamped out from a sheet which would make it an original feature - code 2 or code 3
This is not an early car, it is a Japanese issue as we can see from the thicker cast Monti plate on the front bumper and the gap around the tow hook on the rear bumper. All pre 1973 SF15 in white had flat plate for decal on the front and complete rear bumper

Fascinating - part of a complete set which may or may not have been collected individually. If bought as a whole set back in 1980 then they could all be samples from Lesney factory or some recent ebay buy from Japan. Are all the boxes in the same condition - no sun or water damage,no traces of price tags or collector stickers on baseplates? The fact that there is a set means its much less likely to have ever been owned by a VW car club member.
