Thanks Ghosty, least I know now. Do you think many would have got to the shops like this or would it be very rare to get past production and get out in to the shops?

The printers would be working to a percentage of what they are happy with regards letting errors go out to Lesney, Lesney themselves would then only reject really obvious mistakes or badly printed box artwork, again to a percentage, something like a ratio of two or three mistakes in every twenty boxes is pretty normal, but mis-registered printing errors were more serious, where one colour bleeds into one or more of the other colours, giving the effect of looking at a '3D' picture without wearing the special glasses, would result in whole batches of boxes being rejected, very few of these actually made it to market.

The funny little box error you have shown is easily missed by the intended customer, children and to reject the box for such a small error is not feasible, so they let this type of printing error go.
