Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow by Hot Wheels
Re: Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow by Hot Wheels
The 2 pink ones had so many paint chips £100+ is reasonable. Few months ago also in vectis the pink in mint blister was sold for £540+ a price more or less in line with ebay...

Re: Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow by Hot Wheels
During the development of the 'HOT WHEELS' models, several "Matchbox" models were Cannibalised into prototype Hot Wheels versions. One of the most well known models used was the Ford Mustang and they tried to blank out the slot on the side of the model used for the steering function.
When the Rolls-Royce was to be developed for the range, they did not quite Cannibalise a model as such, they simply grafted on a set of their low friction 'HOT WHEELS' onto a normal production issue #24c Silver Shadow saloon and put a picture of it in their catalogue for 1969 (shown below), but you can see the rear wheel has not been seated correctly.

I seem to recall that the first catalogue illustration of the 70a Austin Water truck was actually the Dinky model, so it would have been hypocritical of Lesney to complain!

Re: Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow by Hot Wheels
Additional to the above, the 1969 Canadian catalogue had a Dinky Toys Silver Shadow dressed-up to look like a new 'HOT WHEELS' model. I don't have an example of this catalogue, so if any members here do have one...can they post a scan or clear picture of this 'Dinky-Hot Wheels' hybrid model, thanks.

The casting was not ready for their Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow so the Hot Wheels designers took the Matchbox model, substitute the regular wheels with their redline wheels and affixed it with a redline baseplate and then used it for the catalog photo shoot. The rear wheel seats ok and rolls well, just that the left rear suspension is currently not working properly resulting the left rear wheel actually meets the wheel arch when the car sit. Possibly this had already been the case back in 1968 but this shouldn't be the reason they blurred the photo.
The Holy Grail model. It's interesting seeing a MB car in a HW baseplate. The baseplate was from Custom T-Bird, one of the models from Hot Wheels' Sweet 16. The words "Custom T-Bird" were rubbed out but can still be recognized from its unique baseplate layout. 1970 MB catalog, the wheels from the drawing look alike those Hot Wheels' redline wheels (minus the red line). The release version of 1969 HW SS and 1970 Superfast SS. The body line of the 2 is quite different. Cheers,

Re: Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow by Hot Wheels
Ritchie, thanks for showing the incredible 'Hot Wheels-Matchbox' hybrid model. I had wondered if the model had survived over the years and clearly it has.
Is the model your own property and if it is, can I ask for your permission to feature it in my Rolls-Royce slide-show and club talk, I give to model car clubs, I already show the catalogue image and it would be nice to now show the actual model.
Many thanks Ritchie,

Thanks Ritchie for sharing that photo, this is actually an easy one to copy -the redline wheels have silver paint instead of hot foiling so just using old wheels will do - I even have a beater T -bird so may try copy this in the winter
Re: Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow by Hot Wheels
When the G box artwork was done it appears Lesney did just copy HW hub pattern which can only be because Lesney hadnt finalised their own when the artwork was done because its a valid point, those Lesney models could be HW with those hubs!
Re: Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow by Hot Wheels
Yes the model is under my possession and of course you can use the images on your materials. Feel free to do so. BTW, you mentioned that there're 2 different interior colour on the pink model. Did you record other interior colour differences on other models? I have silver, red, blue and silver(black top) on mine and wondering about others...GHOSTHUNTER wrote:Ritchie, thanks for showing the incredible 'Hot Wheels-Matchbox' hybrid model. Yes it's not difficult for this one. Some people do that to fill-the-shelf or for whatever reason. I think the below models would be impossible to do so, especially the plastic one.SMS88 wrote:Thanks Ritchie for sharing that photo, this is actually an easy one to copy -the redline wheels have silver paint instead of hot foiling so just using old wheels will do - I even have a beater T -bird so may try copy this in the winter
