Yes, I've gotten a lot of one hundred just thrown loose into a box. Metal-on-metal for sure. Makes me crazy to think if there had actually been anything valuable in there.

One of the worst things, though, is the over-use of packing tape. People get over-zealous with it, making it near impossible to get the item out of the packaging; and in the worst cases, they actually have stuck it to the item itself, which then either rips or gets residue on it. Morons.

I always pack items the way I would expect to receive them but one of my pet hates is receiving over the top instructions, I always pack well so it will fit safely into the specific sized boxes that I buy to post these safely and at a reasonable cost. I had one buyer send me an email with 3 pages of how he wanted it packed and if I had done this it would have taken the box size to the next payment level, when I told the seller this he refused to pay the extra so I posted it my way which by the way was a much safer way. He received the item all nicely packed with no damage then left me a neutral feedback WTF, oh well another one added to my ever growing Banned from buying from me list.

So how would you request a seller to pack an item? (Putting it another way, would you object to my instructions?)

I'd pack it any way you wanted as long as you are prepared to pay the extra costs over and above the cost price postage that I charge for the way I pack. If you wanted me to pack it in a way that takes it over the 6 inch square cube or 80mm width I would fully expect you to pay for it as my small packages are charged at £2.90 and if it goes over the said size it takes the postage price to over £5 and I don't see why I should bear the brunt of that cost. Is that unreasonable ?

Yes.
If you're dealing with a noob seller, I understand.
But I agree with Tim. Its a pet hate, and just shows that the feedback system is useless, as clearly no one reads mine. The later larger superfast boxes flattened out touch both sides of a max size small parcel (UK royal mail sizes). I personally keep them whole, model inside with a polychip or two. them bubble wrapped so nothing moves. Then placed in the centre of a box surrounded by polychips. Never had a bad report yet doing it this way.

I don't feel the need to Hugh as in all my years trading on eBay I've been asked this question twice and the other time was not a problem as it was before the postal changes and not a problem although it might be a good idea to add it for future reference. A lot of my sales are repeat customers who know how well I pack items and the rest prolly read my feedback where my packing is always praised.

I got one today, a Hot Wheels Mustang (blasphemy, I know) that had clear shipping tape *right over* the whole model. I assume in this misguided person's mind, it was to hold the two little plastic people in their seats, so no problem(!?) It came off well, thankfully, but still...

When buying models on Ebay, I always add something along the following lines to my PayPal payment:
"Please ensure that the model is well protected by wrapping it in e.g. bubblewrap and then placing it in a stout cardboard box, wedging it firmly in place using screwed-up newspaper. (Experience has taught me that wrapping a car in two sheets of kitchen paper and then sending it in a padded envelope does not provide sufficient protection in the post.)

If a box is involved, I ask for it to be flattened and sent sandwiched between two pieces of thick cardboard sellotaped together.

However, in spite of the above, there are still morons out there who see fit to ignore my requests (or should that be instructions?) regarding how my property should be treated!

I don't think 99% of the sellers ever read any thing you send them. I do the same and most of the time it get's packed the way they want to and tough sh!t for the buyer...that's my oppinion

Unfortunately that's almost certainly true. However, having given the seller precise instructions regarding the packing method does then allow you to occupy the moral high ground should anything go wrong.
