Well done, MM.. though I'm no expert, I think your black engine 'Moddy' is the real deal. I also agree there's something quite appealing about the way it looks compared to the standard chrome-engined version. Now if it came with red wheels and/or a 'flower' sticker, that would be a bonus!
Cheers,
Ken

Thanks Ken, if it did come with red wheels and/or a flower sticker then it would be an obvious engine swap but a good looker!!!

Alex,
My reasoning for the yellow mod rod with black engine not existing is this. I presume that toward the end of manufacture, Lesney would have only mis-matched a part or label if they ran out of the proper part or label for the car. So, the reason to put a black engine on the yellow mod rod would be that they ran out of silver engines. I often see yellow #34 Formula cars (equipped with the identical silver motor) that were produced as late issues and all of them seem to have a silver motor, so I do not think they ran out of this part. I also do not think the Silver Streak with the chrome engine is a real variant either. I do not recall seeing many if any Roman Numeral editions as part of multipacks or other very late issue packaging so I just do not think the model was manufactured into late production and they are likely home made.
Lesney did not seem to run out of cat labels applied to the mod rod and they seemed to have a surplus so they occasionally applied them to the #73 Mercury Wagon and #41 Ford GT. Presumably they ran out of Bull labels and blue 41 labels for the 41 and 73. This is why I also question some of the Mod Rod label variants such as the bull label. They did not seem to run of of cat labels and did not seem to have a reason for changing the mod rod label. And why would they would put a bull on a mod rod if they did not have any for the #73's.
Of course, this theory does not take into account errors or rogue factory employees!

Yeah, it's all about the looks! Wishful thinking on my part, but considering it was the Lesney factory... anything's possible!
And with that, off I go in search of red-wheel variants

That's a real beauty, Alex! The 'Moddie' looks sooo juicy with the 'flower' label! Keep a look out for wheel variations (all 4-spoke or all 5-spoke wheels). I also saw your Lotus gems on another thread.. you're doing well this year, aren't you?
All the best for '14, and happy hunting!
Cheers, Ken
