Y12a Omnibus Rebuild

Post by Tinman »

This all started with a busted up Omnibus and I wanted a nicer one. I mentioned I was thinking of doing my rebuild in Green cause I had seen a Shand Mason in green and liked it. YY Bob put up a Lesney catalog page showing a drawing of the Y12a and it had a green body and yellow upper deck/seats. Later Bob posted a pic of one that was done in green and super detailed. I knew right then and there that's what I wanted to do and the super detailing will keep it from being confused with any prepro in green that might be out there.

So above is what I started with. Busted off draw bar, the horse on the left has a front leg broken off right below the knee and the draw bar T is broken off in the side of the other horse's mounting hole. The stairs upper mounting lug is broken off and the stairs are just sitting on the deck (just barely by the spread river at the bottom).

With the paint stripped, I removed the mounting point of the broken draw bar and putting a new Steve Flowers draw bar casting on body. Next, I secured the stairs at the top using epoxy and a little more epoxy to tighten up the spread rivet. I had to drill out the remains of the T bar that was in the side of the one horse. I had another horse in my parts bin with a broken leg, however it was a different leg than the one on my horse. The parts bin horse became an organ donor for the leg fix. A few minutes digging in another parts bin full of YY stuff and I found the rear wheels I needed for the bus.

The driver was fairly simple to detail and I was able to get the bus body back together and the decals on. The horses were a completely different story but slowly and surely (more slowly than surely lol), the horses were done and could be installed. I'm really happy with it and that's all that counts at the end of the day. I get bored with too much horse drawn stuff in red. All those Shand Mason variations, then you come to the red omnibus and it's all too much red.

Edit: :o Gosh Darn-it, as soon as I looked at the uploaded post I spotted the missing detail on the neck strap of the right horse's bridle. %$@# all, that's going to be even more difficult now that the horse is on the drawbar. I'm just going to wait until the morning to fix that issue

It is a very nice rebuild and does make a change seeing it in green instead of dark red.

Thanks Kevin. I fixed the bridle and here's the little guy all ready to go into my small display cabinet.
