Matchbox models on old HO layout (photo)

Post by Tinman »

This is a photo of my very first HO train layout complete with Matchbox models. This would be dismantled around 1965 or so and the next layout would take up well over half of a two car garage.*A couple of the models I can not make out, number 2 and number 12. Maybe some eagle eyed viewer can make those two out.

Number 14 is one that you would not even recognize as a Matchbox as it's just a dark shadow, however I still have the model that was on this loading dock. A repainted 63a Ford Service Ambulance (painted up as a bix truck with new decals on the sides).

Here they are by the numbers:
1).  47 Ice Cream Van
2).  ??
3).  42 News Van
4).  20 Impala Taxi (fairly sure)
5).  13 Dodge Wrecker, decals removed (because it works out of the ESSO station) and with grey plastic hook
6).  37 Coke Truck
7).  21 Milk Float
8).  11b the (larger) ESSO Tanker
9).   60 Morris J2 Pick-up truck
10). 55 Ford Fairlane dark blue police car
11). 64 Scammell break down truck
12). ??
13). 34b VW Van
14). 63 Ford Service Ambulance

And the A1A Esso Pumps Accessory Pack

My best guess is that number two is a 17C London Taxi. Whether I'm right or wrong, that is a great old photo!

I wonder if number 2 is a repainted Marshall horse box? Number 12 is really difficult. Could it be a Dinky Dublo Austin lorry?

No. 2 could be 20a with a load added. (It certainly looks like a standard first-series ERF cab.)

We agree on the ERF cab. Interesting that the 20a and 35a, released in consecutive years, have the same cab in slightly different sizes and proportions and similar colours.

I cropped and enlarged the two unknowns. Maybe some help, maybe not. Click to enlarge.

I think #2 may be a Foden Sugar Truck (MB #10).

I can see where you're coming from, but isn't the radiator grille too large and the wrong shape for that?

Perhaps the grille was enhanced with a little additional silver paint as I was pretty fast and loose with the silver paint detailing on those railway models. I painted the silver wheels to black on a #51 Portland Cement truck (who knew in the early 60's that would become a hard to find variation?)

Forget the #10 Sugar truck, I know what it is ... #51 Albion with the sacks of cement load!
