Hi Mike, thanks for the display and inquiry.
One needs to consider the condition of any baseplate or casting whenever shades determination is the subject of the day.Acids from handling, poor storage, contaminants in the air, fats and other imposing factors incl heat do affect the paints appearance.
In this instant with the paint being baked & durable, its advisable to first remove the buffer layer with a bit of acetone, thinners or brakefluid using a Q-tip (cotton bud) and then do the comparisons.
Hope this helps,be cautious though, ;)

Interesting base - took 2 photos of mine.

First photo is flat on table & it is easier to see flat maroon colour of green variation on the right.
To the left are a silver with glossy crimson base, then 2 lilacs with glossy baseplate.

Held up to direct sunlight the colours appear brighter and it's harder to see maroon of green variation on the left

Does the model second-left have a rear copper plated axle?

Hello Numi.
I hope you do not get cold fingers in the view.

But the snow is very soft.

At my next mountain tour accompanies me a Matchbox model.

Greetings Mike of the snowy Alps

Yes John it is a cooper plated - well spotted. I see Nick has similar one on his site http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk ... /xx27c.htm

Copper coated axles are fairly common on models that the rear axle did not need to have rounded ends to hold the wheels on, The bodywork would do that job, oddly I have never seen a copper coated front axle or any rear axle with rounded or crimped ends.
