Glow in the Dark seats!

Post by GHOSTHUNTER »

During discussion of the Dinky Toys Action Kit Rolls-Royce Phantom V, I mentioned I had an example with Glow in the Dark interior-seat moulding. This clearly raised a few eyebrows as why would something like that exist so was asked if I had a picture.

The pictures below are those I showed.

I only know of one other Dinky Toy with Luminous seats and that is the NSU Ro80 as model number 176.

I used to have one from new and thought the glowing seats were great. Odd that they used it as a selling point on the NSU but not on the Rolls-Royce but there is big time-line difference between them so I guess the big selling point for the Rolls-Royce was the fact it was a kit of parts.

The luminous seats in the Rolls-Royce are not as far as I know referenced anywhere in the model media and consider my example as quite unique among a dozen or so examples of the kit Rolls-Royce I have.

This glowing Rolls-Royce is an amazing item but it can not be compared to the RO 80. The seats of the Rolls seem to be self luminous like the hands of an old alarm clock but the seats of the N.S.U. are only illuminated when the lights are on.

You should be carefull, these luminous materials are usually radioactive and today their use is forbiden.

The seats in the Rolls-Royce have to be generated by allowing a bright light to illuminate them just like the hands on a watch.

Wrong.

The NSU seats are still glowing when exposed at light, even if the light system hasn't been used for many years.

Just spotted this thread.
The Ford Transit also has had glow in the dark seats. I have seen them in the Hertz rental van and one of the police vans. I havn't been actively searching these for years, so they may be in others. If anybody has a good collection of these vans, they may like to take a look at them again in the dark! Camera flash is best for giving glow-in-the-dark plastic a quick short lived charge.
