i am on Facebook, and I do not get any adds, also I can keep in contact with my family

and other collectors through Messenger which is perfect. I have also found that when I put

a post on there about casting variations the post seems to get a lot of discussion on the item.

Be it Regular Wheel or Superfast, but if i put the same post on here it seems to get no responce or very little.

May be Nicks site the members on here so knowledgeable that is just passed over as being to common?

There are some things that are not worth viewing but one just takes the rough with the smooth.

That's not a bad idea. The forum would have to be read only with no ability other than Admin or Mods to post. Posts would have to consist of teaser pics and a short sentence about the teaser topics with links to the forum. To insure effective teasers the pics should be cropped, perhaps incomplete and maybe even watermarked. In other words, bait.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

All very doable.

I think we would need Nick's approval before doing anything on Facebook but, setting that to one side for the moment, does anyone object to the read-only concept described above?

I'm a Newbie here so not exactly qualified to comment but I refuse to be part of the silent majority.
I avoided Facebook for years. My ladyfriend uses it to maintain contact with her large widespread family and it excels in that field. With regard to the various Models of Yesteryear Facebook Groups I'm inclined to think it's less successful. Most of the posts are people advertising their eBay listings, asking for valuations or displaying photos of their latest prize purchase of nothing special. Mick Flack started a thread to encourage people to show something rare and that generated a few interesting posts - and lotsa 'Likes' and comments of 'Wow' or 'I want that'. It did bring to light some interesting models from Barry Scott but not much else. This isn't a criticism of Mick or his site, just an observation on the superficiality of the masses.
On the other side of the coin I started two threads on the MOYBOYZ Forum to encourage members to step into the light rather than just be voyeurs. My First Yesteryear was even less successful than My Favourite Yesteryear but the contributors were generally the usual suspects. Even members I've got to know (often through Facebook) didn't join in.

That is exactly what will happen. We are largely of the generation that likes this forum as is.

Sooner or later, this forum is most likely to go the way of MICA and the dinosaurs. Let's do what we can to preserve its existence instead of speed up the evolution of its demise. Preservation of this forum would be my personal choice. A reminder for others, when it comes to Facebook, there is a reason why it is free. That means you are not the customer, you are the product. Having FB without ads is something I've never seen. Ads or no ads, FB tracks your online presence and monitors your online purchases and sites you visit. It pretty much resembles malware and its tentacles run deep on your devices. You may often see prompts to continue to access various sites by signing on or connecting using FB - bad idea!

As for Messenger, I shun that anytime and every time I can and things got so bad I had to completely remove it from my smart phone due to associated problems.  I've weened family off Messenger completely and back to email. For emergency short bursts of urgent information, they can always send a text message to my i-Phone. As a result I am now getting better photos and more informative/substantive emails than anything they ever sent by Messenger.

All of these social media sites are proving to be the down fall of decent and accurate communication and have severely impacted the quality of our relationships with one another by making everything more anon and less personal. The amount of abuse using social media to perpetuate misinformation, harassment, intolerance, bullying, and disruption simply for the amusement of a select few sociopaths is alarming. There are now medical terms for those who can't separate their hand from a smart phone and who go through horrible meltdowns when they realize they have lost or misplaced their hand held device and are suddenly all alone and cut off from the world. God forbid they enter an area where they have no service or wireless connection to their device.  FB is a contributing part of this digital crisis that humanity now finds itself inexplicably joined with at the hip (or hand) giving the "infected" user the false feeling of being one with the masses while being more isolated and alone than ever before. The side effects for the infected will be long term.

The "Borg" have turned out to be real and have seemingly assimilated most of us practically overnight. We haven't even realized we've become drones in a collective who is covertly harvesting our individual creativity, manipulating our opinions and taking the contents of our wallets at the same time. "Social Media" is the greatest oxymoron of our time and, still in its virtual infancy, it has changed so much, for so many in so little elapsed time and benefits so few.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

That is one of the best posts I've read for a long time. Well said that man. My hat is suitably doffed.

Hi everyone,

I wouldn't be against using facebook as a way of increasing the presence of this forum, though I suspect new visitors to us will be wondering why not just post my collection pics on the facebook group?

Facebook is not set up to be a forum, but to make it easy to upload photos and videos and add brief comments, so that is exactly what happens there. It does exactly what it says on the tin - social media. There aren't many ad-free alternatives that I know of, after all, somebody has to pay the bills.

Uploading photos on here takes more work, especially with multiple photos, and if you're used to quick and easy facebook uploads, maybe this is stopping users posting here instead. Also, there are many older threads on here that have broken 3rd party photo links, that are now impossible to follow meaningfully. (and those only exist because users found it too difficult to post here directly.)

Sorry, I haven't posted more often, but I don't often have something interesting to add to existing discussions, as I've only been collecting for 4 years now, and most of my collection is pretty easy to find. Whenever those 'spot the gem' posts are added, I can never spot them! You're all too good!

I like to own the model under discussion so I can examine mine and hopefully add something of value.

The issues regarding the posting of photographs on this Forum are well known. Unfortunately (to the best of my knowledge) the necessary code cannot be added via the Administration Control Panel, meaning that only Nick can make the necessary modifications since only he has the required access codes.
