Nothing to do with models!

Post by GHOSTHUNTER »

I have to post this here to give all the forum members the news of a health issue I have since the end of April this year.

My left eye has bad distortion and constant out of focus vision. This is caused by having to tiny specs right inside my eye from birth. Before 2013 an eye specialist said one of the specs is just moving into the important visiual area and no medical treatment will cure it. It was also pointed out the spec may stablise and cause no further problems but it may also move!

It now seems it has moved and a recent hospital visit a couple of weeks ago, only confirmed what the earlier eye specialist said. The out of focus vision can not be corrected by a lens so no point in changing the prescription of my glasses.

The result of all this is it makes it difficult reading and typing text such as for the forum as many mistakes are made and I have to keep going back to correct them.

So, appologies for spelling mistakes etc that will crop up in my comments, it is not something I do on purpose.

Thank you Stephane, no need to express any sadness as it is something I have managed to live with for many years its just that at 61 years of age, it has become worse. At least I am not in any real pain, more discomfort and inconvenience than anything.

Sorry to hear this Kev. With your passion for minute detail it must be galling to suffer from this problem. As you know my eyesight is pretty poor, and one day soon I think I really will have to visit an optician for the first time in my life, as the magnifying glass I use now is too big to fit in my pocket!

Yes its a bit of a blow to my models hobby at home and in the shop yet despit this, I have painted a plane, repaired an expensive vintage Fleischmann loco, cleaned and adjusted a Hornby 'Swift' clockwork power boat and everyday so far have been working on the shops working railway layout cutting track and doing a lot of soldering and I currently have a collectors Audi LeMans car model to restore!

So I am trying not to let it get in the way and while I am working I am not thinking about the problem until I have to read something on the computer but the rest of the staff are aware of it.

No joy at the eye hospital then Kevin..As we get older there is usualy something new every day to xxss us off and make us think we are falling to bits but things have a habit of settling down or we make allowances for them .Like me going for a pee every two hours at night ,imagine what that gets me thinking but its been going on for the last 15 years that I havent had a good nights sleep so if anyone knows how to control this without a finger up the jacksy please let me know...Sorry I digressed there...Hows the driving? It might sound daft but have you tried reading with one eye it worked for me when my eye site started playing up last year..Keep the Bailey chin up ..Oh and did you get the Email as I want to get started with that sale as her indoors is chomping at the holiday bit for a break....Whats this shop then?--Pray tell all some of us may like a trip out to a good model shop as there getting a bit thin on the ground...Cao Ian..

Kevin, What can I say? That's awful news, and i really feel for you, especially since the quacks don't seem to be in a position to offer any kind of even partial solution. Fingers crossed that things stabilise.
It probably sounds like a joke but, in all seriousness, have you considered an eyepatch? I collect postcards of a particular village where I once lived, and there used to be a dealer on the East Midlands circuit who always wore an eyepatch. Somehow, in spite of having zero depth perception and no peripheral vision on one side, he'd convinced the DVLA to allow him to retain his driving licence and, as far I could tell, lived a perfectly normal life. (Wearing an eyepatch and driving a Roller - surely a man of rare distinction!)

A patch over one eye, and a monocle in the other one. Perfect! :D
