Corgi Rover 3500 and Boat - WalsallLitho

Post by sward351 »

Hi

I have just acquired the Corgi Rover 3500 and Boat on Trailer with Walsall Litho Stickers. I understand these were Code 2s requested by the Walsall and given to employees. Walsall provided the stickers for Corgi models at the time. Well that is my understanding.

What I was hoping to find out is who in Walsall might have got one, ie was it executives or everyone. It does seem odd that this would make it all the way to Australia but here it is.

Any info greatly appreciated

Sean

I am sure Bill Manzke will be able to tell us more on this one when he sees it.

Actually this is completely new to me, as I have not heard of it before now. I am just as curious about this as you are. Corgi made quite a few promotional models not available to the general public, so I am always delighted when a new version pops up.

So it could just be one persons custom Code 3 rather than a Code 2?

And this information came up on an old Ebay search .............tis interesting stuff

Rare Promotional Vintage Corgi Rover 3500 SD1 & Speedboat on Trailer . Condition is Used. Dispatched with Royal Mail 2nd Class.

This was a promotional diecast set produced for the Walsall Lithographic Company who, late 70s early 80s, sponsored a powerboat team. The set also comes with the promotional drinks coasters.

The company produced transfers and stickers for Corgi, hence, the promotional sets that only went to staff of the company. A parent of mine was one of them.

As a promotional item, the set never came in a printed retail type box but rather the clear plastic display one in the photos. This box is showing signs of wear.

I never played with the set ,however, as the box testifies I removed it to look at plenty of times.

The car, boat and trailer are in near mint condition. The car has the same moving parts as the retail version and the powerboat has a movable rear engine.

I've never seen the powerboat as part of any commercial sets and is all plastic. The car/trailer are all metal. The set is made in England.

I have no doubt that it is from the factory. The metallic blue Rover was from the first issue in 1979. The powerboat was issued in gift sets with either a Jeep, Fiat or Jaguar pulling the trailer, but not in those colors and not with a Rover. Marks and Spenser also had a set produced by Corgi with a Ferrari Daytona. That Rover / Powerboat combination is unique to this promo.
