11.5 x 45 Gray Plastic Wheels

Post by matchbox_n_molars »

I stopped in today to see what was going on within the regular wheel forum. It made me smile to find George's beautiful display of the 10 x 36 GPW lineup. It made me smile again to see my friends Bert and Bill contributing to George's discussion.
It prompted me to grab the Stannard Guide in search of which models came with the larger 11.5 x 45 GPWs. Am I missing anything?

3B- Bedford Tipper
12B- Land Rover (this one look familiar Bill?)
13C- Thames Wrecker
16C- Scammell Snow Plough
25C- Bedford BP Tanker

I recognize the GPW 12b Land Rover! It should be a star in one of my new threads (in the Resto Forums): "It was broken, now it's fixed." BTW, really nice job on the windshield frame rebuild/repair. That stuff had to be the top grade of that UV cure material! A really nice line-up of late model GPW variations (and great photos too). Thanks for putting those up and sharing.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

Someplace around here I've got some photos of that repair of the 12B windscreen frame repair. Tinman, If you need me to go looking for those for your repair feature let me know.

Hello Greg,

Good to see another nice summary from you.

The 12b Land Rover Series 11 you show, is that the one you rebuilt the windscreen frame. It is nice that such a hard to come by code has been repaired to be road worthy again and is pride of place.

The only additional model that can be added to this list although it does not appear in M.J. Stannards work but worthy of mention is the 24b Weatherill Hydraulic Excavator with 11.5x45gpw. This is currently at Nick’s code 5 on his table. From what I have catalogued and confirmed it only appeared with either a slight grille variation or side rivet in late 1963/64.

As usual, nice photos by the way.

Bert

edit
ha ha it is all about timing, since reading the initial post then going away to add some detail Joe also spotted the 12b repair.

Everyone is at home and the Forum is a good way to pass the time and stay in touch with the hobby. If you have some free time, it would be nice to see the process.

Here's one of each - 9x36, 10x36, 11x45 and 11.5x45. The 62b Rentaset Commer is also listed in Nick's guide with 11.5x45 wheels. Does anyone have one of these?

The main thing I think of when I see a 62b with fine GPW is an old issue from the now defunct Matchbox Collectors Community Hall (MCCH). A collector had acquired an example of the 62b with these wheels and forum owner Mark C went on a personal crusade to attack this model and the collector. Since it was not listed in the Stannard (and he'd never seen one) he came to the instant conclusion that the model was fake and the collector was a fraudster. He lead a rather nasty campaign against the model and it's owner.  Since then, many of these have come to light. If a fellow member- collector from the MCCH had one of these, they didn't dare show it or speak about it out of fear of being banned or called out as a fraudster. After the passing of that forum, many of these variations have come out of the closet and into the light of day (so to speak).

My 62b was a bonus lucky find in a badly photographed group lot with a 14c Lomas with cross guides and BPW and a load of other 60s Matchbox too. They were being sold by the original owner, who was pleased they were going to a good home. I’ve no doubt it’s genuine!

Greg and All,
Thanks for the information and photos!
Yes Greg, I do remember that 12B Land Rover --- nicely done!
I hope that you and the family are doing well and making it through this terrible pandemic OK. REALLY hopeful that we'll be able to see you and others in July.

Here is a photo of my 62B Rentaset Commer with fine thread (45) GPW. Not sure whether it is 11.5 or 11 and unable to pull out of cabinet at the moment....... Sorry for the photo being cut but not sure what photobucket is up to now!!
Thanks,
Bill
