Let them read it, by all means. I know the younger ones cannot imagine we did exciting things and had a life before them, I know I didn't when I was that age. My Dad and I talked a lot since I (technically) grew up, and before he died three years ago. It was the first time I got to see him as a person in his own right rather than just my Dad.

Interesting reading about your adventures getting your buddy out. It is amazing what we can actually accomplish when we can get the government chair drivers the hell outa the say, isn't it?

My ex Debbie's father was too old to serve during ww2 but he was one of the first to join the AFS (auxiliary fire service). In 1940 he went into a blitzed and burning factory and rescued 13 women workers who were trapped inside, For this he was awarded the George Cross by King George V which (I believe) is the highest civilian award.
My great uncle was a Spitfire pilot, I have only met him a few times in my life so his service history is unknown to me but I did have a crucifix that was made from the plexiglass canopy of his Spitfire, Unfortunately my Dad "borrowed" it from me and I never saw it again.
My Uncle Jack was an army motorcycle messenger, he would not talk about his service but he did claim his BSA motorcycle could do 500mph as it managed to outrun a Messerschmitt 109 doing 400+mph when he was shot at by one out on a straffing run.
And I would like to recommend that anyone holidaying in Florida to visit Joe and Marylin for the very warmest of welcomes, I spent a week at their home lounging in their pool and getting tipsy until way after midnight putting the world to right with Joe and Marylin, And just mentioning Joe's name got us VIP treatment at the Turtle sanctuary down on Florida Keys.

Its funny, in all the time I knew him, my old man never, ever talked about the war service he did. About all I know was from a few photos with him and some mates. I know he served in Egypt and the Middle East mainly as well as Sicily and lost his best mate, he did tell me he got stuck on a landing craft as the doors wouldn't open and they got the hell shot out of them but made it to the beach finally and that's about it.
My kids are the same and don't believe we had a life before them but if I told them some of the things I got up to back in the 60's and they did it I'd kill them !

So true!!!

Mick, I've always enjoyed the stories and escapades that you have shared. We've certainly made the most of those interesting decades that make up our past and our personal history.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

My dad was in the same areas. He was Royal Artillery. Went right through Italy, then copped a Blighty and came home.
