An interesting idea but, like you, I don't see how it would work in practice (especially with 1950s technology!).

Yes, I’m rather hoping that someone who knows something will tell us how it really worked!

As you say, it doesn’t seem likely that printers would bother to cut up used plates, so the individual pieces must surely have had some use.

Just found some of these in a box. Thin metal and very sharp edges

The closest box artwork this lines up to is that used for the 41b B3 box. Each of the other boxes has a slightly different style of the number 4. There are 6 boxes used for the 41 models each with a slight artwork difference.
Does this have any printer id on it anywhere please? What is the reverse side like?
