As I have checked my models I have noticed that there are perhaps three decal variation:
a) with thin letters
b) with thicker letters
c) with thick letters

My very early model with green hubs has a maroon painting, similar to M6a trailer.
2a Maroon body & base/no hole on base/green metal hubs/square tow hook/silver headlights/small decal.

I have revised the post as I found another variation among a handful of duplicates that I had stored away.
It has red body & base/no hole on base/red plastic hubs/round tow hook/red headlights/small decal; currently listed as var#4.
However I am still on the lookout for the variation: Red body & base/no hole on base/red metal hubs/round tow hook/red headlights/small decal.
Thank you Bert & Antonin for the additional info & pictures. Another model that generated a few interesting variations.

Does anyone know anything about this alledged pre-pro (or color trial)? It was on Karl's (now defunct) web site for toyresto.com. It was in a photo archive section for rare and unusual original models. It was listed as a rare pre-production model with no further information. No base photo, no photo of the tow hook, only this one. It has silver headlights and a detailed grille. The decal looks to be cut away from a Fowler Showman's Engine decal (that's my best guess).

Has anyone ever heard of this example or seen it before?

The paint job on the wheel hubs looks like someone forgot to dust the hubs before painting them. There's a lot of trash in the paint. I'm not sure how I feel about this particular example.

I'm not sure how I feel about this particular example.

Though the seller doesn't deal exclusively in scarce Matchbox models, I have my doubts, too. Such a rough paint finish is definitely subpar for Lesney. The hacked-up decals aren't doing it any favors, either.
