“The Baron of Beef” decal on the 5c Route Master bus is reported to have been a promotional item for a restaurant.
But what does it be other side of the bus mean?
What is or was the connection between “Mecca Ltd “ and “The Baron of Beef”?
Is “mon 6961” a phone number (Monmouth 6961)?
Thank you
‘Hungry to know more about the Baron of Beef’ Kurt

Re: The Baron of Beef
I’d also like to know the link between Mecca and Baron of Beef!
You’re right about the number: London used exchange names and then numbers. There’s a list here. I always assumed that Mon was for Monument but it was apparently Monarch (there’s a scan of a 1968 London telephone directory on the same site that confirms this). Monarch was one of the City of London exchanges - that’s the business district near St Paul’s. London is, of course, two cities - Parliament is in the City of Westminster.

Re: The Baron of Beef
Hi Kurt and Glenn,
According to Nicks page Mecca Ltd were in the dance hall business. In my own catalogue listing of this model I also have a note that they were a food catering providers and restaurant owners. So perhaps they were the owners of the London Baron of Beef Restaurant not far from St Pauls Cathedral, where the model was given to special guests of the restaurant.
The phone number on the 5c is the same as on the 74b(UK) 74a (us) SF Daimler bus label ( but in a more modern format) which indicates it is the phone number of the restaurant.
