if I remember correctly the no test rule has been in place in the channel islands for years ( I last visited my relatives in the early 80s) it may have changed but from memory no test was required BUT if you was caught with an in-road worthy vehicle you would be prosecuted
as I said it was a long time ago and a 17yr old fixer may be mistaken

Re: Tax and MOT exempt cars, do you own one?
Update on what I need to do for my 40+ year old car.
I had a tax reminder form arrive the other day which considering the car is now tax exempt was a bit of a surprise. Speaking to a fellow old car owner he says you still have to actually tax the car at a post office, its just that the till receipt should say NILL for the amount due/paid.
Before I actually tax it I have to declare the car tax exempt using a V112 DECLERATION OF EXEMPTION FROM MOT form which is handed to the post office counter staff at time of taxing.
My car should be matched to a letter of the alphabet for exemption from a list of vehicle categories on the reverse of the V112 form which for most of us with everyday use old cars is category 'R'.

Does this mean your car is not only tax exempted but also doesn’t need an MOT?GHOSTHUNTER wrote:Update on what I need to do for my 40+ year old car.

Yes Rod, providing the car has not had substantial modifications to the body and or running gear such as larger more powerful engine and wheels to match which really puts those cars into the 'Q' plate and Hot Rod type modifying.
It has been accepted that the majority of 40+ year old vehicles are owned by enthusiasts who are capable of mainting their vehicles to a high enough standard to be considered road worthy but any owner can still go to his local friendly garage and ask for an MOT to be done!

This is something I have not seen explained yet and a question to surely crop up among classic car owners over and over again. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) was heavily involved in the consultation process for the government in all these changes so without digging deeply within their files, I wonder what they say about it!ClOwY wrote:In that case how are you insured in a accident?

I have taxed my cars online for years.
But yes, to change the tax class of a car to historic, you need to send off a V112.
