need a job at our beloved modelcar factory ?

Post by matchboxmarcel »

Recently I bought 2 nice job adverts to work in the Matchbox factory (June 1974)
This is the better one.
Interesting to know that I paid more for them then what people earned per week then.

I doubt this is from 1974. Decimalisation was 1971. I started work in 1973 and my first (take home) pay packet as a 1st year apprentice at SEGAS was £14.32p

Note Basic pay of £10.04p for a 40 hour week. The £5 other payment was "London Weighting" as I was training in The Old Kent Road in SE London.

The telephone no. is given as AMH 5533 (AMH being Amhurst telephone exchange). Exchange names were phased out around 1966.

Hi Marcel, A great advert, i think the advert would be before 1970, the wages seem very high perhaps because it was in London. My first wage packet in 1965 was £2. 10 shillings minus NI stamp & holiday pay, but you could get into the Winer Gardens for two bob & a pint of mans was one & three. Pete.

many thanks for all the great help dating this.
The seller has this and the other 1 (which I will post here after the weekend) dates as June 1974 but that must be wrong.

@Bob. Nice that you kept your 1st papers also. Maybe they come along on Ebay in the future !
I only started t work in 1991 but have the papers.

Despite what is written in ink at the bottom of that newspaper cutting, the year is 1960, because of the below...

October 1st was on a Saturday in 1960.
October 5th was on a Wednesday in 1960.

both these dates appearing in the third column about when the evening shift starts.

...and they were still requesting employees in 1969!

That's a wonderful advert, so many snippets of information. The dates in October also fall in 1966, is that a bit too recent?

They certainly do, but I was going on 1960 because of the company name is presented as...Lesney Products & Company Ltd. Lesney Products moving into the status of a Public Company in September 1960 and the mention of a new factory extension opening shortly which I took as the site for the main factory in Lee Conservancy Rd opened in 1963.

If I have put 4 and 4 together to make 10, I do appologise :D
