Mega Malvern 7 April 2019

Post by DrJeep »

Did anyone else go to Malvern yesterday? Despite being there at 9, I didn't find much. There were some cheap Benbros around, but mainly the easy-to-find variants (orange Hudson tourer, red Chevrolet station wagon). Anyway, this was my little haul:

I hoped the 6a quarry lorry had silver trim - it did, but clearly added by an owner (the bed of the tipper had also been painted silver). The 5b bus - from a different seller - had also had its grille painted silver (I think it had been on a railway) but was only £2.50, as was the almost perfect 15a prime mover. The best finds were the Schuco Opel Commodore and the 23d caravan, which has the unlisted 7.5 mm wheels. The Morestone VW is in pretty good shape too.

Love the quarry truck and the prime mover - great condition - despite buying a fair number of job lots I don't even have a beater yet of either of these

I have a couple of the Morestone VWs in beige and the harder to find light blue one with black wheels in an opened blue blister pack. I think the light blue version also comes with grey wheels and there is a metallic blue version as well but I have only seen a photo of this in a magazine

Thanks, both. It's a shame the 5b's grille has been painted silver - I think it spent years untouched on a model railway. The quarry truck really isn't as good as it looks in this picture, but the prime mover is very good. This must have been a very popular model in its day.

I think the most common is the pale blue with grey wheels. I've never seen the metallic blue either. They often fetch surprisingly good prices on eBay because the VW collectors are after them.

For interest, here's the Schuco Opel Commodore and the Matchbox Opel Diplomat. The Commodore was a pretty big car for its time: a four seat pillar-less coupe (also made as a Rekord with a 4-cylinder engine). The Diplomat was absolutely vast! Both models were made in the same period, I think.
