The book update that never was...

Post by Bill Manzke »

At one time, I had plans to update my books with new editions. I collected a lot of images and made a lot of updates to the listings. Lots of information was gained from lively discussions over on the old MCCH site. We all learned a lot.

Here is what the new cover might have looked like. Note the slight title change approved by Corgi Classics Ltd at the time.

Sadly the economic downturn of 2008 killed those plans. The Juniors collection was later sold off to finance a large project, as was about 1/3 of my larger Corgi collection. To finish any update now, I'd need to get others to help. Unfortunately, the publisher has a number of the existing books still in their warehouse, so there is no interest on their part for new editions.

Maybe once I retire...

That’s a shame. New updated info is always a good thing.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

I'd buy one.

Likewise I've sold the majority of my Corgi collection in the last couple of years, with a few more still to go. much of which was catalogued on the MCCH. However the funds for me have gone not my Dinky collection.

Still have most of the photo's of the Corgi's but didn't have anything really special as far as I am aware.

Cheers

Dave

Hi Bill.

Have you thought about having your updated book shown above self-published by an online photobook publisher. There are several now offering this service and once registered on their website you have acces to editing tools where you choose virtually all aspects of the books design.

As you already have the backbones of the book sorted I would think it would not be too difficult to trandfer it across to the online editer for you to carry on working on the project.

Some online photobook sites prefer to do books that are photo specif with minimal text, but when I investigated one for my own use (https://photo.jessops.com/product-categ ... DZEALw_wcB) I was under the impression text would not be a problem.

I have seen and handled an example of a photobook and was quite impressed with the quality, but the quality of the pictures will make or break the final result so the best quality pictures will need to be used if you intend creating more than one copy of the book to retail to others.

Have look at the site in my link and see what you think.

While I am the author, I am still under contract with Schiffer Publishing. Any book update would need to go through them.

That doesn't stop anyone else from writing their own book though.

It would be strange to me if your contract did not contain any escape clauses. So. for instance, it would be unreasonable for you to be tied to a particular publisher in perpetuity, but for them to repeatedly refuse to publish any of your books. It might also be worth investigating just what constitutes a book in terms of your contract, since a digital publication might not be covered. II seem to recall that the Beatles had issues regarding whether digital versions of their songs were covered by the royalties arrangement they had with EMI.)
