Vectis Auction 6/12/18

Post by Idris »

Reservations have been expressed regarding some of the models being offered at Vectis's forthcoming auction on 6th December. This thread is for Members to present and discuss the perceived shortcomings. The online catalogue can be found here.
Please note that i) this is a rare exception to the Forum's policy of discouraging the general discussion of live auctions, and ii) the laws of libel apply.

I have many of these in my collection which came from the factory at the time. I would suggest that most of the models are genuine. Some of the labels give rise to concern but as they were all available on long rolls in the factory it was easy to apply a label to the wrong model.
I believe that chromed and plated models could not be produced in the Lesney factories and the process was shipped out to another company to apply. It proved to be too expensive for standard models but specials like the plated yesteryears were produced in this way.
I cannot find the models on this site with odd bases. Please enlighten me. As a rule of thumb base plates were left unpainted or given a clear coat as the body colour was usually the focus of attention.
If there are concerns on particular models please let me know and I will compare if I have that variation.

Ok lets have a look at this base to start, this must be glued or held together some other way.You can see straight past the front rivet and into the base.

Hi Nigel,
Yes you are right the prepro models look ok, but I feel that some of the base painted models just do not look right.
I will do my best to highlight what I can.

I would agree that, for the most part, the pre-productions seem to reflect known variations. However, I share some of Jason's misgivings.
I'm a bit out of mt depth when it comes to Superfast, but I've never heard of a black-interiored Tyre Fryer, much less one with a coloured base. Christian doesn't seem to list them either.
Are these known variations?

I have been informed by a contact of mine that these are being offered through Vectis by an former Matchbox employee. I am trying to find out who that may be. It would seem a bit unusual for Vectis not to name the person as surely this would provide a lot more Provenance. I am also aware that some models have not been listed properly for example the metallic green #5 Lotus Europa which has been described as a colour trial but is infact a Brazilian Roly Toys Model. I have sought advice from a couple of Brazilian Matchbox Gurus who have both confirmed that all the Brazilian models appear to be genuine with the genuine Inbrima or Roly Toys labels. I would suggest that we don’t jump to any conclusions regards any models being not what they seem as there would appear to be an abundance of rare trial, prepro and Brazilian Matchbox which do appear to be correct.

What about the 2 models I have highlighted , I am sure that the prepro models and the Brazilian models are genuine.
But what about these coloured bases? Do these look genuine? Can any one enlighten me on a hand punched base rivet.

I think that's an understatement! - I bid £100 on a pre pro superfast Mack well before the live auction started - I was outbid and wasn't too worried as I don't normally buy superfast and thought it might make £300-400 - however it raced up and away and went to £1100 + 25% for commission and VAT.
