New Bases for Leyland Trucks

Post by Tinman »

It's getting to be a real problem finding play worn Leyland Pipe Trucks, Tankers and Tippers with a base that has both ends of the bumper intact. I had several of each model and all of them had a bad bases/bumpers. What I also had is a bunch of is Hutless Site Hut Trucks, but while the base is the same forward of the front axle, the rest of the base is completly different. Since most site hut trucks seem to get little play and all of the ones in my beater box have complete bumpers ... I decided to see if I could convert some bases to use on those other short base Leylands. The pipe truck, the tanker and the tipper all required slightly different modifications of the site hut truck base, but it was an easy job cutting and modifying the bases with a Dremmel.

The result is three sweet looking restorations and I made a group of White Base trucks. I was very pleased with the results of the base coversions and now have a use for bunches of old unwanted site hut trucks that are without huts.

Did you paint the bases white?

I went to the trouble several times because I think they look cool white. Andy made replica white bases at one point. He sent me one.

They look spectacular!

Dave, I just revisited this thread for the first time and noticed your question. The answer is; yes, the bases are painted with Krylon Fusion.

OK, that's what I use too. Fusion is good stuff.

Did you strip the chrome off first?

Tom; I don't bother removing the chrome, I just go straight to white.
