9a Dennis Fire Engine

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) refers to a model with small escape wheels (variation code 9-1B). The AIM's “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) clarifies that there are two escape wheel diameters: 3/8" and 1/2, whilst Houghton states that the smaller wheels are 16-spoke and the larger wheels are 12-spoke. Finally, Leake ("Concise Catalogue of 75 Series Matchbox Toys by Lesney" (4th edition, reprinted 2006)) lists the smaller wheels as coming from the covered wagon. However, since the covered wagon wheels are actually all 12-spoke, this all needs sorting out.
Stannard does not list any variations not already catalogued by Nick.
U.K. Matchbox did not examine the model.

I have bought one collection and there were quite interesting variations, I have never seen. Typically the axis of the ladder wheel is painted. I have received two identical models in one collection with the ladder wheel axis without the painting. Has anyone spotted it, or is it only an overlooked variation?

I have only two 9a fire engines, both in embarrassingly poor condition. Both are without paint on the ladder wheel axle.

Thanks Glenn for checking it. It seems that it is not a rare variation, only overlooked.

Hi Antonin
Please can you check the escape wheels on your unpainted axles? Both of these have 3.5 mm hubs and square rims, which does seem to be unlisted. I'll add a picture showing rim profile tomorrow.
Thanks

Here's a close-up of the fire escape wheels of one of these. The hub is just under 3.5 mm. I think the rim is square, not rounded. What do you think?

I have checked my 9a Dennis Fire Engines and they are the same as yours, hub is circa 3.35 mm, and the rim is the same as yours, but I would say it is rounded.

It is strange, I have checked my spare models and all have the painted ladder wheel axis. The variation without painting seems to be a rare one.
