K-6a Allis Chalmers Scraper - No decals.

Post by kbean63 »

I have a K-6a Allis Chalmers Earth Scraper with metal hubs that is in very good to excellent condition that doesn't have the decals that say "Allis Chalmers" and "260". I've inspected it pretty closely and I'm pretty sure it never had them. The area where the decals normally occurs is recessed anyway so the chances of them being completely rubbed off over time doesn't seem very likely, particularly on one that is otherwise in such great condition.

Has anyone else seen or had one of these models that is minus decals?

Some seller will 'improve' a model with damaged decals by removing them completely. Also it is not entirely unknown for Lesney to have sold models that missed having the decal applied, But with a 40 year old toy like yours we will never know why the decals are missing.

After seeing that they made a number of GT-40 cars with bachwards labels and decals it wouldn't surprise me that a few other models made it out of the factory without any decals at all. The scraper would be a good candidate for that because on that model they're easily overlooked, as opposed to something like the K-8 car transporter which would stick out like a sore thumb if it were sans decals. I'd be amazed to hear that anything like that ever existed.

Anyway, with decals or without, the Allis Chalmers scraper is one of my favorite Matchbox models. I'm having to resist the temptation to acquire an entire fleet of them. I already have more Greyhound buses than I know what to do with.

As I child, I remember my mother buying me a 13c brand new from a toy shop, but when I got it out of the box it was missing one of the side decals!

That's even more odd that they tagged one side but not the other.

It reminds me of when I was about 9 I became obsessed with a Hot Wheels flying colors funny car that I saw in a store. I spent the next several weeks saving up to buy that car and eventually I bought it and happily went home to find that when I opened the blisterpack the elaborate paint design on the other side of the car was unfortunately flawed. It appeared that it had rubbed against something before the paint had dried. Under normal circumstances I would have taken it back and exchanged it but since it was the last one I chose to live with it. I still have it.
