There was an issue of the complete series in gold (called, I think, the 'Matchbox 75 Challenge'). Could there be a connection here? Some kind of spin-off, or simply using up residual components?

this isn't an item of the Gold Challenge Series. This is the original Lesney issue.

ah yes sorry completely forgot
he remembered acquiring it as part of a collection along with some similar models with gold foiled plastic parts, the collection was from a known collector but he did not feel at liberty to say, other than he thinks they are right
