Ewan's 2017

Post by Ewan »

Hello, nice to be back collecting and nice to be back on the forum. I'm hoping to add to the few Crescent Toys I retained but as ever anything which looks old and unbranded catches my eye and I'm not really sure in which category my first buy falls. I have seen these railway platform trucks listed as Crescent and as Morestone (for Salco) but have no idea which is correct. If either is correct......

There seems to me to be a tendency for unbranded items to be attributed to a maker, and for this to then 'stick' and be accepted as fact - just look on ebay for all the Benbros tractors being sold as Charbens or Crescent. My guess is that this truck was described as Crescent because of the wheels, which do look rather like some of this maker's. On the other hand, there is no ID on it at all - not even a 'Made In England' and for that matter nor is there any fatigue. I notice there are 2 holes in the seat - I wonder if it had 2 people on board or is there an unusual driver out there with 2 pegs in his backside?

A few more just in - Crescent lorry, Unknown maker steam roller and a mechanic for my Crescent garage which was one of the few things I kept from before. The lorry is in a rather fetching shade of metallic pink/purple which just goes to show how ahead of their time Crescent were - a fictional vehicle in that colour is a bit 1970s to me!

I don't think the roller is very old, it has a 'seam' down the middle to make it look like an old cast iron toy but when you turn it over there's no sign of the join and a fair bit of paint overspray. Any info greatly appreciated. Anyway, I bought it because I had a hunch it may fit on the lorry

Apologies for the rubbish pics - daylight still a bit hit and miss up here in January so they were taken inside under the house lighting.

Hello Ewan!
These look like fun pieces.

What vintage would you guess these are? To my (admittedly uneducated) eye, they look like 1950's vintage.

But it's interesting to compare the Low Loader and the Road Roller. If they are of similar vintage, then they look like they were aimed at different types of potential customers.
The Low Loader looks like a fairly thin, light casting (or is it stamped?). The design and the single color metallic paint are futuristic and abstracted.
The Road Roller looks to be a fairly heavy casting with thick paint in primary colors. Is the design is based on Road rollers from a generation earlier? This design seems more nostalgic.

It's always interesting to see diecast people with their tools, equipment and clothing.

Enjoy!
Kurt

PS. does the Cresent Lorry have crimped or rounded axel ends?
Happy hunting!
Kurt
