Making a Matchbox car
Making a Matchbox car
I came across this very interesting video which shows the processes involved in the manufacture of a model car.

Thanks mm, things haven't changed much. I like the line at the end when they're sitting round the table, "Wow, is that the pre-production sample of the new Camaro?"

Thanks for the link!
It should be added that this is from the Tyco era, already more than twenty years ago. That Camaro was issued in 1994.

Re: Making a Matchbox car
Thanks Motorman for sharing this! That was fun. From watching this process it seems that the guy with the real talent in this process is the guy who goes from the drawing to that initial resin model. There is a great deal of actual hand carving in that process as it was depicted.

I suppose it's only a matter of time until 2D CAD drawings can be linked to a 3D-printer, thereby enabling elimination of the hand-carving step.matchbox_n_molars wrote:There is a great deal of actual hand carving in that process as it was depicted.

This video is from the kids show called Reading Rainbow hosted by Levar Burton. I had a copy on VHS years ago.

Funnily enough the first time I watch the clip i thought it was probably made with children in mind. That's probably why I enjoyed it as I am still a kid at heart.matchboxtom wrote:This video is from the kids show called Reading Rainbow hosted by Levar Burton. I had a copy on VHS years ago.

Great. Thanks for posting.
Loved the way external mirrors were retained all the way by 63 times.
That clip was made nearly 25 years ago - about 40 years after the first 1-75s rolled out.
Guess the detail and processes have improved markedly since the 90s.
I wouldn't know, haven't looked at anything made after about 1968 I guess.
MM and Ghosty, my only concession to super fast will be to put a single blue corniche on display. Had one 40 odd years ago - love it with the burgundy Shadow.
