Roly Toys - 1965/1970

1965 - The Roly Toys Industry and Trade SA Toys started its activities in 1965 with its own line of miniatures Zamak. Their line of models was composed only of domestic vehicles, which made them different from any existing miniature cars. But faced with the difficulty of creating new molds, he chose to import the Matchbox models from England. The Roly Toys was owned by Sir Maurice Nhuch who was lord's son in law Kikoler Arno A. Kikoler owner With. And Ind. Plastics SA, or simply known as KIKO Toys where he worked until 1963 when he decided to found the Roly Toys.

1967 - The Roly Toys began importing models from Matchbox England. Initially his factory was located in Rio de Janeiro, first in Andarai district and a second time in the neighborhood Santo Cristo, moving later to Manaus to produce under license from Lesney, nationally all then existing catalogs of Matchbox models.

1970 - In the early 70s, with the installation of the Manaus Free Trade Zone in the state of Amazonas, the Roly Toys moved to the Industrial District of Manaus, when it changed its company title to Inbrima Amazon Toy Industry SA keeping initially its sales office in Rio de Janeiro, at the place where it worked its plant in Santo Cristo neighborhood. the biggest obstacle encountered was the development of a national ink lead - free, due to the fact a common ink does not adhere to Zamak, Because it would peel with ease. Their models were identified by a decal with their printed name glued next to the Chassis of the miniatures and also in some models adopted different colors and decals of the English line. With the emergence of Inbrima Roly Toys brand ceased to exist.

1970 - INBRIMA - Inbrima Ind. De Brinquedos do Amazonas SA was the successor of Roly Toys Indústria e Comércio de Brinquedos SA, located in Rio de Janeiro, and decided to move to the Manaus Free Trade Zone (which began in 1967) , At which time he changed his business name (although initially his sales office remained in Rio de Janeiro). The biggest obstacle encountered was the development of a lead-free national paint, due to the fact that an ordinary paint did not adhere to Zamak because it would peel with ease.
To identify their models, initially Lesney's name was literally scraped from the miniature chassis without any identification of the Amazonian company being put in, then in a second moment it adopted the same Roly Toys procedure, placing a decal on the Lesney brand on the chassis Of the models, the third technique of identification, the models came with a plastic stripe fixed in the chassis with the words "FAB ZF Manaus" and finally, the chassis of the models were already made with the name of the printed company. As with Roly Toys, some packaging and colors used were different from the English line and in some cases, the models had their names changed (1 example is the model MB-06B that in the English line is called Mercedes 350 SL with Metal chassis and the Brazilian line is called Mercedes 350 with plastic chassis).

1982 - This year, Inbrima Indústria de Brinquedos do Amazonas S.A., ended its activity together with the factory of Lesney in England.
That same year, Inbrima's industrial park was acquired by Brinquedos Trol S.A..

2009 - At the beginning of May, David Kupermann, one of Mauritius Nhuc developers in creating tion molds thumbnails of Roly Toys, died in Rio de Janeiro.

What this should be saying is in 2009, limited edition re-issues were introduced to celebrate the original production models. They were placed in new versions of the original boxes.

Are you able to do some clearer photo's of the printing on the track set box?
Con you photograph the track set parts that have Roly toys printed on them like the loop base you have shown.

I'm sorry this set and a collector friend and he who sent me these photos, I'll see if I can get better photos..

If you imagine a timeline from about 1973 on the left and 1981 on the right, the picture below shows how the packing changed over time (did not have all as #27 boxes so I had to improvise).

The earliest boxes have a Roly Toys address (Roly Toys models were also issued as blisterpacks). When the company name changed to Inbrima, the address changed, even though the early Inbrima box style was the same with the yellow labels. There are other box and label variations not pictured.

Apart from the one you‘ve shown, I found the box with Pontiac Firebird box art also has a Roly Toys version. Wonder if others like Dodge Challenger / Formula 5000 boxes also exist a Roly Toys version?

That doesn't make sense to me. The Firebird was not made until 1975. At that time the company name was already changed to Inbrima?

Yes, you are correct! My memory got me wrong as I remembered there was 2 different Firebird boxes and I thought one was Roly Toys. I found my boxes and actually the difference is only on the phone number. Roly Toys was noted on the Siva Spider look-alike box only.

Hi Hudson- assis,
Thank you very much for the track set photo's. Very interesting.
Were there any other Matchbox items like garages, other track sets, carry cases or play sets made in Brazil?
Generally you only read about the cars as that's what most people are interested in.
Here in New Zealand some items like a carry case and a couple of the cardboard road ways were made under licence.
