Thanks George for these two posts !

I do have a question about the 50B: is the darker version the one E1 box or the E3 ?

Thanks again for your help !

Hello Matchbox Pat, the Dark Tractor box is "E 3".

Do they count for shades?

Hi Ritchie !

Looking at the yellow background on the left one, I would say the box in general is darker on that one. The 44B was only released in E3 box, so I don't think it would "count" !

The pattern for shades seems to depend on the sub type (E1/E2 are often darker, for example). But color variants are also available for the same sub type. However we have to be careful on the general aspect of the box (exposed to sun or other sources of lights) that may make a box "lighter" from a color perspective.

The left box has either been subjected to more play ware handling or simply printed on darker stock in the first place. The backing card is definitely darker making anything printed on it appear darker.

I have seen these Two boxes with the Two car colours (Brown and Lilac), several times before, so there are plenty of them out there and for private collections would have been catalogued as Two distinct variations.
