"Ghosty" adds a Rolls-Royce model to his collection!!!

I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE, SOMETHING BEGINNING WITH...'Long Seat'.

I have to thank Jason ("nearlymint"), for his very kind gesture of gifting me another 'Long Seat' #69 Drop Top Rolls-Royce. The model was one of his recent acquisitions and he showed it on the forum.


Here it is in front of my original example, the model that started all this nonsense in the first place...




While I had my collection of these out of storage, I thought I had better take a few pictures. In particular the Three distinct colours available on this model. Light and dark Blue have been shown before and other members here have examples of them. I have however a lighter Blue version which in many pictures has a tendancy to appear Aqua Blue.

I had to source several examples before I was convinced it was a proper factory finish and not just Sunfade. The picture below has hopefully captured the Three colours.

The shade differences are clear to see Kevin. Are you able to confirm if the black tonneu cover is original to that particular example?

Glad to see you get another longseat maybe one day you will find a minty one.

Hi Alex.

That actual example with the Black cover is on the 'B' body casting and quite a long way from the introduction of the Gold models that were fitted with them from new.

I have internet sourced pictures of another example also in the dark Blue colour with a Black cover, but on the 'A' casting body. I have another dark Blue model with the normal Tan cover on the 'A' body casting (my version number A9), which is the last version with a gloss Black baseplate. Version A10 is the next issue with a pale Yellow baseplate so the model at A9 (remember another dark Blue coloured body), is close enough in production to have a Black cover but does not, so it is conceivable the dark Blue models with Black covers are genuine.

My code listing for these models has had to be split into Two rows of models because of the main body castings.

A1 to A10 are all 'A' body castings.
B1 to B10 are all 'B' body castings.

So A1 and B1 are the earliest versions I have, with A10 and B10 being the last versions and they have Yellow baseplates coming just before the introduction of the new Gold coloured bodies (all on the 'B' casting body you'll be pleased to hear... ).

Very interesting mate, I appreciate the detailed reply. The reason I asked was that I have seen maybe 2 or 3 blue SF#69's for sale over the years with the black tonneau cover and have always considered the covers had been swapped with a tonneau from a later gold model. I would love to hear from Rob or Christian on this subject to see if they have any evidence of these blue #69's ever leaving the factory with black covers. I am not even sure how easy it would be to swap these plastic covers having never tried however I am sure it is possible to do so without to much difficulty.

With care the covers can be removed from the model by gently easing the clips with a small screwdriver from inside the rear wheel-arches, but I was loath to try the Black one to check the tool number on the underside, as it is very easy to break the little clip(s). I have a Tan cover handy and there is a 6 or 9 (depending which way round you hold it), centrally positioned and presumably the Black cover could have a later number.

My username of ''Ghosthunter'' is because of my unhealthy appetite for the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost and any toys and models based on it. I love searching out the strange and obscure items such as novelty lighters in the shape of a Silver Ghost or very hard to find Japanese kits.

Bob Tutt (''YYS4BOB''), however brought this model to my attention asking for my comments. I decided to buy the model as it was cheap enough if it turned out to be a dud. The following pictures hopefully show this strange 'Copper' Y-15 Silver Ghost.









This model is normally painted in different shades of metallic Green, but when it was chosen for the 'Giftware' range it was given a 'Chrome' or 'Gold' plated effect. 'Copper' is not a known recorded finish.

The model is all standard specification but has had a hole drilled in the rear floor in a very precise position. The 'Copper' is as real as I know Copper can be and does tend to buff up with a cloth. Some tarnishing can be seen on various parts like the bonnet and the baseplate is more of a Satin finish like a lot of the usual 'Giftware' models, but in general the model looks factory finish.

Does anybody here have information on this or other 'Copper' models from the range.

the first thought about this model is that it could be that the Chrome plated models get before the final plating an undercoat of cooper somehow like a primer.
At work I did some nickel plated parts and they have this undercoat as well.
So maybe the model did not receive the final coating?

Glad you got it, as a curiosity if nothing else. I've not seen anything like it before, and wonder if the hole was for mounting onto a post to allow the coating to be applied?

Yes, that is very plausible, the plating on these models is not proper 'Chrome' as used on old Car components as far as I know, but a powder based process unless someone knows better.

Yes, that is very plausible as well and maybe once it is mounted on something the hole is not so visible.

I think Stephan is correct in his assumption , the copper wash is part of the plating process.
