New Maxwell Toys of India

Post by toysnz »

Scored these recently and what was of interest to me was the fact the boxes are marked "Mattel Mini manufactured by Maxwell (india)". One box even has the Mattel logo... first time I have ever come across Maxwell toys in this type of packaging - all my previous scores of boxed Maxwell toys come in generic Maxwell packaging without any reference to any other company, even though they are all copies of Budgie, Corgi, Dinky or Matchbox toys.

As you can see, once opened there are not two Jaguars, but a Jaguar and a Land Rover, a fact I knew about when purchasing the items.

Knowing India, the fact that it says Mattel and even carries the logo does not necessarily mean that any official licence was in place or that permissions had been granted 9especially since the logo appears to be the wrong colour).

Very true.. but what had me wondering was why after all these years did they suddenly decide to "credit" another manufacturer...

Perhaps it's a marketing ploy? Product differentiation - our toys are better than theirs because ours are approved by Mattel.

If the models and packaging could be seen to be direct copies of Mattel items, then I am sure they would have a lawyer talking to Maxwell. As they are not direct copies, I think Mattel are happy to let it ride and get the free publicity, they are after all being sold in limited markets, not Worldwide as with the real Mattels.
