21d Foden Concrete Truck -Crimped pin- unlisted

Post by yellowfoden »

Hello Nick and all collectors of variations.

Here is a variation that I have not seen documented anywhere in reference books or online. It may have been overlooked or possibly just that there was not that many done this way.
It is also that type of variation not always visible in photos. Until now.... :)

The good news to share is the steel barrel pin is dome one end and on the worm gear (spiral end) it is crimped. On the other 1 million I have looked at :o they have been dome and riveted (rounded)

It was an interesting exercise in trying to photograph for the forum and get the steel pin in focus. The base plate or spiral gear was confusing the camera focus. Hope the images show the detail.

What is interesting from a model evolving point of view is that this crimped steel pin is on the second casting with the narrow braces on the axle supports. (The first casting has smooth supports)
If the crimping was being trialed it would have been more logical for it to be on the first casting unless this was a method being considered in lieu of the riveted end which tend to vary in shape. (and before the introduction of the plastic pivot pin)

The pivot pin hole under the hopper is the oval type.
A second image captures all the other key variation features.
A third image is a close up.

Very Nice Yellowfoden! Now I have to look mine over once again and keep an eye out for this one. We knew that crimping machine was still around to do those reverse color 13 D Wreckers in 1970, so you have now shown us it was also used in 1969 on this Concrete Truck. It is very strange to see this one occur in mid-production, and revert back to a much slower crimp process. Perhaps this was a trial for the oval type of rear hole on these trucks? kwakers

1969-70 we had a great deal of power cuts if I remember correctly, possibly a hand crimping machine was re-introduced to keep production going ?.

Actually looking at the model again it does seem to have an excess of yellow paint around the base rivets, could this be due to the rivets being flattened rather than spun ?.
Dick, It would be very nice to discuss your unusual snowtrack, you know, the one with the unusual 'rollers'.

Nick, I will forward an example to Tinman with his permission. He would be able to do justice to the model in photos, and can also provide whatever knowlege and history/ experience he may have on these unknown(?) oddities. Still no word back from the Seller yet.......He may have eaten too much Turkey over our Holiday weekend.
I am glad I got your attention with that one Nick, how about that MoneyGram for the 2 Auction models? Are you in the U.K. as of late, or perhaps visiting Scotland? Will that $$ payment method work for you? I have a MG to send Tim also, they are quite painless, and I can do them both in one trip.
The thought of keeping production moving by using the crimping machine had also crossed my mind on this Concrete Truck Nick. If the riveters were at capacity, without power, or under repair, it would seem as though 100 crimps per hour would aid in completing a backed up order of several thousand of these over a period of a week. Now that they are known and shared Thanks to yellowfoden, we may be able to get an idea of survival rates by the numbers held in Forum member's collections. kwakers

Hello mrmoko.

As it stands at the moment it would go after Nick’s code one and before the current code three with the clue being narrow axle braces and before the hole in the base castings.
There are other variations still to be listed on Nick’s codes for the 21d, so code number may change.
