44b Rolls Phantom V --Silver grey w GPW - new variation?

Post by durangokid »

Found this model at the recent "Gathering" in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I believe it is the Silver grey 44b with grey plastic wheels (GPW) 9x24. It is Stannard Type A body. I do not find this model variation (GPW) listed in any of the major reference manuals/sites inc. Nick's. The silver grey model is listed with BPW and SPW but not GPW. I have compared the newly acquired model to my other silver grey models plus the met. mauve models (see pics below) and I believe it is silver grey. I know there are many shade variations of the 44b, but this one is a new one to me. I bought it from a reputable MB Dealer at the convention who had it "stashed" in a big case. Cost was very reasonable.
Sorry the pics aren't better (color variation is more distinct in person), but best I can do right now..........
What do you think??
Bill

Sorry Bill to dissapoint you, but as soon as I saw the first picture, I saw the model as just a light Lilac-Tan version from very early on in the production 'Time-Line' and on my 'Time-Line' for this model, the very next issue is the model that shows the distinctive darker colour we all know.

Still a very nice version to have though.

Ghosty, Thank you for your feedback and history of the model. I do see a slight tint of lilac in the right light. It still also looks close to the silver grey version.
I wonder if many other collectors have this same "color" model with GPW? As you said, a fun one to add to my 44b variations!

Thank's Bill. As these light coloured versions follow-on from the Silver-Grey first issues, it is conceivable they are accidental colours chosen to keep production going and were seen as a close match to the last colour, thinking most owners (Children!), would not notice or be concerned, just a thought.

I do think a few members here have examples.

It's a handsome looking model Bill and a nice addition. It might be me but I've always found the silver/grey models to be harder to find regardless of the wheels. When I checked the variation table I was surprised to see the silver/grey and the mauve were valued the same with bpw/spw, I know it's slightly off topic but is that accurate?

I have never owned a 44b with spw in any colour so they are all equally rare in my books, Bill I hate to be the bearer of bad news but those axle ends do not look right to me, check them against another model but I'm sure the axle ends have been peened rather than spun, also no star shape on the axle end.
