Thank's Christian, Volume 11 No.3, (printed in pale Blue for some reason), has the Ford promotion. I felt sure it was 1976, but could not check. I use different laptops for my hobby and the only decent laptop for viewing the forums does not have all my files and Matchbox information on board, I had to rely on memory.

Y-1 Model T Ford
Re: Y-1 Model T Ford
To return to the original question: The transparent orange overlay on the photo actually has nothing to do with the quality of the printed picture, it is simply a mask used to eliminate the unwanted background. It's a material called "Amberlith" which is a thin peelable layer on a transparent plastic carrier sheet; the film layer is hand-cut to the shape desired (in this case the outline of the Model T) and peeled off the areas not wanted. The overlay can be used in making a second exposure on the halftone film for printing, burning out the background, but in this case the register marks show the overlay was probably shot as a second film neg and lined up with the halftone neg to block out the background in making the printing plate. So there you go, more than you ever wanted to know about a masking process made obsolete by Photoshop…

Thanks for the educational reply. This is just what we need to prevent speculation and guesswork. Thanks again.
