In addition to listing three body colours (compared to Nick's two), the NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) suggests that this model shows a sliding scale of silver trim: variation 24-1A (orange) has the silencer and both hydraulic cylinders trimmed, variation 24-1B (yellow) has the silencer and only one hydraulic cylinder trimmed, whilst variation 24-1C (yellow-orange) has no trim whatsoever. Interestingly, none of the other catalogues note any trim variations.
None of the AIM's “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983), Stannard or Houghton have any models not already catalogued by Nick.
U.K. Matchbox did not examine the model.
It should be noted that Nick's variation table contains a repeated error. Both variation codes 2 and 4 are listed as having "flat head rounded" axles. This should read "dome head crimped" in both cases.

Re: 24a Weatherill Hydraulic Excavator
I like the idea of the no trim versions being added to the variation table.
The no trim variation applies to both distinct colours of the 24a although I have only shown it on my original play-worn lighter colour.
With reference to three colours see attached image.
