A 1977 Dodge Charger originally owned by my dad. I learned how to drive on this beast. As a teenager I needed a car but the cost was too much plus insurance. By that time the Charger was looking really ruff but mechanically sound. My dad suggested I take over the Charger as he was just going to get rid of it. So we fixed it up. New wheels, interior was fine, removed vinyl rear section off the roof, added a sunroof and a two tone paint job with some pin stripes. I drove this baby around for several more years.

I love the look of that one, American muscle but restrained and of course being a member of the Charger Family, She probably saw off a few other brands at the traffic lights Grand Prix... :D

It was originally all grey with the rear quarter of the roof covered in grey vinyl. My dad had the vinyl painted once black which looked more classy. I removed the vinyl and painted the front half of the roof, down the front pillars and across the entire hood (bonnet) a very rich and shiny black. The rest was painted a metallic silver. A thin line of black pin striping was added around the entire perimeter of the black so it was black paint, then a thin strip of silver paint, then a thin strip of black pin stripe and then the silver paint. The paint was all my dad's idea and I loved it. Too bad the photo does not do it justice.

Although having a 5.9l (360 ci) engine, it was very powerful but it was long and heavy and not torqued for speed. It was not fast and rather sluggish off the start. But it looked good and it was still peppy. It so easily cruised at highway speeds and at higher speeds could still throw your head back into the seat. The best part.... comfortably cruising with 6 up and down the local "hang out" strips (4 in the back and 2 in the front and all were rather comfy. A third could even be added up front but only if she let you drive with your left hand while your right was hung over her shoulders   )

Once the car was heading towards its last miles, I needed something more dependable, efficient and all year round.

I picked up this 1991 Mercury Cougar. Now my friends all used to bug me about why a guy in his early to mid 20's was driving a "daddy's car". It looks too formal, something your dad would drive, ooooo aren't you classy"

Anyways, this baby had the same 5.0l (305 ci) power house as the Mustangs. The original owner (I was second) ordered it with the optional 5.0l HO V8 as opposed to the standard V6 or V8. The car was also available with the Supercharged V6 from the Thunderbird SC of the same years but they were not as a dependable engine.

This "daddy's car" was designed to get the kids to school quick. A total sleeper she was. She looked tame and timid, but off the start she would compress you into the seat the entire trip down a 1/4 mile stretch. Handled nicely for a rear wheel drive too, but not that you would want to push it too much on a track or anything. Much to the dismay of my friends that drove smaller coupes and sport models, this Cougar would never be more than a couple inches behind their rear bumpers if she wasn't already out in front.

I loved this car !!!!!! It rode so nicely, and because of the power, it had a lot of excitement to offer. Sadly, I did not keep up with the poor Ford metal quality. She rusted from the inside out and eventually the rocker panels and even the frame rotted. It wasn't worth saving. But I sold the engine to some kid who blew his mustang's. At least the heart of this beauty got to roar on a little longer :D

Incredible how so much tech is now finding it's way into cars, just hope Microsoft or Apple has nothing to do with any of it... :D

Two of my real vintage cars at the Connacht Spring Show Ballinrobe (a poor version of the Royal show).
Always loved Land rovers and have had quite a few over the years. The one in the photo needs a respray its on the list of thing to do
The Humber Hawk I purchased in May. I have been after one for ages, I have very fond memories from childhood sitting on the pull down arm rest or sleeping in the rear window,( i couldn't fit in there now  ) my Dads Humber was dark blue with red interior. I remember holidays in Cornwall, Devon, Aberystwyth and touring around the ring of Kerry with a caravan (another to do thing on my bucket list). many local Sundays out having Picnics around Derbyshire and also visiting family in Luton, Cambridge, Northampton and Navan , the only breakdowns i remember was 2 punctures on the same trip and a gearbox/clutch problem in Devon (got longer holiday that year) :D
They come up for sale now and then, but either need a lot of work or over priced. the one i got needs some attention to the wheel arches and door bottoms, still presentable and runs well. when driving the Humber or Landy I always have a smile on my face, although it can get scary when driving the landy with the humber on a trailer behind :o . I love attending the vintage shows and go as often as possible and hope to attend many more :P
