Did anyone see the recent prototypes auction?

Post by David Tilley »

Hi guys,

Did anybody see a recent auction that contained a number of prototypes of some early 1970s Matchbox Superfast made out of resin? Now I have no idea on who the designer was behind them, as it was never stated in the auction, but I did spend some time admiring the models.
Image
There was this Alfa Carabo in green (much like the real concept was). I still wonder why they never made it in concept green much like the real one.
Image
Baja Buggy in orange featuring no engine in the rear bay (may have fallen off).
Image
Boss Mustang looking rather similar to the real thing, except for the enlarged air scoop on the front, which must have been toned back for production.
Image
Dodge Charger Dragster in red. It has Walt's Puffer on the side, which must have meant something like this was used as an influence....
Image
This is actually a later "Puffer" but I guess whoever created the Dragster prototype had an earlier one that they were using as a reference point.
Image
Image
There were a few Gruesome Twosomes in red.
Image
The Jeep Hot Rod, also in red. This did have an engine in place, which is why I wonder if the Baja Buggy did originally have one.
Image
Maserati Bora. This was red, but even then they were looking at labels for the front.
Image
Image
Mazda RX500 in red both with an without labels.
Image
This was a little unusual. The MG1100 slightly altered into a rally style car. They obviously had plans for this model which never came to pass.
Image
The Mod Tractor in early red prototype form, of which things were scaled quite a bit back. Obviously the imagination was going wild with this at first.
Image
Along with a later blue one where the additional stuff had been scaled back. This one looks a lot more like production Mod Tractors did.
Image
Racing Mini. I wonder if this is where they were going originally with the MG1100, but decided on a different direction.
Image
Team Matchbox or Formula 5000. Or somewhere in between.
Image
Vauxhall Guildsman. This looks really nice in blue. Shame they didn't go with that for production (although if you have a later Bulgarian like that then it doesn't matter).
Image
Image
Image
A few versions of the Volksdragon as they were working out how to create this model. I think the first one was a little overkill with engines, although the second one looks pretty decent with the engine sticking out backwards instead of curving over the roof.

But aside from these, there were the additional prototypes of models that never made it to production.
Image
Like this Pontiac GTO. That would have been an awesome addition to the range. I wonder why they didn't make it. Of course, for those who collect later stuff, they did eventually make it in the late 1990s.
Image
This futuristic looking minibus was probably going somewhere until they decided to go with the Freeman Intercity I am guessing.
Image
There was this Fire Rig. Of course, I do wonder if it was eventually turned into Blaze Buster.
Image
Bread Van. I am guessing whoever did this was also behind Stretcha Fetcha. Was it eventually turned into that model?
Image
Ferrari 512S Berlinetta Speciale.
Image
That would have been a little different.
Image
Abarth 2000 Scorpione.
Image
Another one like the Ferrari concept. I guess these were all done around the same time as the Alfa Carabo. I wonder if bigwigs said there were too many and scaled back on the amount done.

And for me, the best 'til last.
Image
Aston Martin DBS V8. Oh come on! That would have been an awesome addition. I can see that along with the Capri and AMX Javelin as being one of the stars of the early 1970s era.

Thank you very much for showing, I always find prototypes and pre-pros very interesting.

Very nice - but this is not a GTO, it's a 1969/70 Firebird Trans Am. The shape of the side windows and C-pillar is very different from the GTO although the 1970 GTO has a very similar front (without the chrome grille though).

And that would also provide the explanation for not proceeding with the model. I assume that this prototype was made in early 1970. The 1970 (or 1970½) Firebird and Camaro were delayed half a year and introduced in late February 1970. Suddenly this Firebird generation was looking old-fashioned and work on the model was stopped. After a few years, as the current Firebird design continued with only little changes (until 1981), Lesney decided to do a Firebird again (this time a 1974 Formula 400) which was later updated with the 1979 front.

And for me, the best 'til last.

The reason that there was no DBS from Matchbox was that Corgi had been working on one too. I guess The Matchbox DBS was probably still in an early stage when Corgi already released their Rockets DBS; otherwise we might have seen a DBS from both companies (as happened with the Bertone Carabo or later with the Rover SD1).

Thanks for pointing us to this auction, as there are indeed many interesting items to be seen there!

In addition to what has been shown in this thread already, I want to show this prototype of the 63d Freeway Gas Tanker:

Image

This is quite intriguing to me because it resembles the original prototype of the real vehicle which had been designed by the Commer truck company (then already a part of Chrysler) more closely than the eventual production model (only two axles missing):

Image

I learned about this Commer design only recently and was quite surprised about it, as I had not been aware that the Freeway Gas Tanker and Articulated Truck were not products of Lesney's own imagination but had been taken from a Commer design - although I do not think a real full-size example was ever made.

The designer was James Peck
"" A large collection of mixed ephemera, books, drawings, catalogues and material relating to Matchbox and James Peck's career with Matchbox, this mixed lot includes various photographs of pre production models within this auction, various Cartoon sketches of members of staff from Lesney at this time, a Matchbox Tie, various photographs of employees from Lesney, a copy of Matchbox Toys by Bruce and Diane Stoneback, a poster drawn for James when leaving Lesney in 1980 and other contents """
