The founder of Majorette + Norev has died age 88

Post by SMS88 »

Manufacturing the French rivals for boys´pocket money in the 1960s onwards, M. Veron and his brother with their Majorette and Norev brand diecasts and plastic cars certainly gave Lesney a very serious run for their money and financially they kept their european manufacturing base intact much longer than Lesney managed to do. R.I.P. M. Veron
I only had 6 Majos and 2 Norevs as a child but would have bought more if they had been in local shops! Here are 2/3 of my Majos dusted off for this pic today to remember a smaller brand that was in its own way very charming, making relatively few castings in a rainbow of colours, their most famous 1970s model, the fiat 127 with dog Lesney #64 MG style perhaps their most famous!

I don't think Mr Veron & Co get the credit they deserve in the toy industry, certainly not in the U.K. always being overshadowed by Matchbox. Their achievements in the French toy car industry since 1961 are substantial, even making promotional models for the FIAT CAR Co.

Its always sad when news breaks of the founders of toy and model companies have passed away, but in this case, Mr Emile Veron has left a large legacy behind and despite much of the current Majorette product line being made outside France, the parent company, (Smoby) is based in France.

Longlive 'MAJORETTE'.

Sad news Mick. When I was growing up in NZ, the Majorette toys were the best widely available alternative to Matchbox. I had quite a few when I was young and some of them were among my favourite toys - Bernard Trucks, some cool caravans, the DS Citroen Ambulance and the Plymouth Police Car to name a few.

RIP Mr. Veron.

Cheers,
Gavin

The third major figure in our hobby to have died very recently, following Rodney Smith and Marcel van Cleemput, RIP all of you. Here's my feeble group of Majorette/Norev but it does include the Fiat with the rather large dog that Mick mentioned earlier.
