Orange is the new tan...
Re: Orange is the new tan...
Dr Gillogly's Vectis auction had a few different base colours including one described as tan, but no base shot

Shame it wasnt shown. I remain sceptical about it existing with a tan base. Vectis have a long history of providing misleading colour descriptions. I would auggest the tan base they described in the Gillogly sale was more likey a dull orange baseplate but i would love to be proved wrong. Does any member here have a tan based wildcat that we can look at?johnboy wrote:Dr Gillogly's Vectis auction had a few different base colours including one described as tan, but no base shot

I think the tan base was listed as early as 1971 but I notice that Christian has dropped it from his variation list, if it was ever there in the first place.motorman wrote:Shame it wasnt shown. On Nick's site there is also a lime base variation, although I don't recall seeing this previously. Does anyone know if this has been added recently and what prompted its inclusion?
Incidentally, the seller of the Wildcat refunded $45 and told me to keep the model which can't be faulted. I'll call off my lawsuit for the emotional distress caused by shattering my hopes.
Re: Orange is the new tan...
I would think that if Gillogly's mustang had had a tan base then Vectis would have highlighted that and shown a photo, and that the seller himself would have highlighted it to Vectis, what did that model sell for out of interest?
From my experience I have never seen a tan base but that does not mean it doesn't exist, the timeframe is right for the same tan base colour found on the Rolls to have been used up.

If I am not mistaken the lime green base was included following a #8 wildcat find by Mick (SMS) that had a yellow base with lime green tones to the paint finish.Johnny Pimp wrote:I think the tan base was listed as early as 1971 but I notice that Christian has dropped it from his variation list, if it was ever there in the first place.motorman wrote:Shame it wasnt shown. Re: Orange is the new tan...
It only fetched $50, so either someone grabbed themselves an absolute steal or it was mis-described. I don't believe I followed the Gillogly sale but this lot obviously went under the radar of a number of seasoned collectors.Rob wrote:I would think that if Gillogly's mustang had had a tan base then Vectis would have highlighted that and shown a photo, and that the seller himself would have highlighted it to Vectis, what did that model sell for out of interest?

As far as the colour is concerned, I'd always expected the shade to match the Y8-1 Morris: -

It would of course make more sense for it to match the 69-c Rolls-Royce and 70-c tan bases which are a lighter shade.
As far as the 'lime' base that has made its way into the variation table, I would classify that as the code 3 yellow.
