11b ERF road tanker - new varition?

Post by Miller »

Please help me to identify my 11b. All casts without cab brace have crimped axles, mine has rounded dome head axles. Do i have a new variation?

Any signs of Silver paint on the side fuel tanks, if not I think you have because the non-brace with crimped axles design is putting it as an early version but the Grey plastic wheels are bringing it to a later version. I don't know this model as intricately as others do, so we will wait for their verdict, but fingers crossed for you.

Interesting.
I think Ghosty's hit the nail on the head with his fuel tank trim question.

There are absolutely no signs of silver on the fuel tanks! I have another variation, which regarding the list should have silver fuel tanks, but there are alos no signs of paint... Image

Hmm, very nice and you did say about the casting details meaning the holes are filled-in underneath correct!

It would be a Code 8, if it had crimped axles

code 8

red body, silver trim, esso decal, 8 x 18 grey plastic, dome head crimped, 2.5mm brace & oblong hole, no brace, grille & headlights

I can verify Miller's "New" variation because I added one exactly like it to our collection in September of 2013. Ours is NMint, and also has the cab without rear brace, 8X18 GPW with domed riveted axles on it, the base with 2.5mm half round brace and an open oblong hole above it's rear axle. It's fuel tanks were left unpainted from the factory just as Roland's are, so this one may be added to Nick's listings when they are updated. :D
I believe we may have discussed a very similar non braced cab with gray plastic wheel domed riveted axle model on the Forum at some point, but with silver painted side fuel tanks. If not, I may have that one recorded as an added "open variation" in my Stannards (We do not currently have a model like it), but I may have even been outbid on that one on an E Bay auction at some point. I would have just recorded it as a "new non-Stannard" variation to keep looking for even when I was not the successful Bidder on the original model I had seen listed in detail. That second one with silver painted side tanks could be added to Nick's listings as a 'footnote only', in hopes that 2 or more can be found, verified, then added to Nick's codes at a later date per Martin's Maxum. kwakers

Thanks Dick for confirming my new variation! How do confirmed variation get into Nicks List?

About the painted fuel tanks - could it be, that they may have been forgotten or not made do to fast work speed?

The unpainted fuel tanks are usually found on the later Tankers Roland. There are several explanations for our out of timeline early unnbraced cabs being found without painted fuel tanks on them. You named speedy production and a factory worker forgetting or missing them while doing the silver paintwork. BUT, This new variation has GPW and later riveted axles that were done much later at the factory. When those axles were riveted, unpainted fuel tanks were normal by that time. The very odd part of our models is their unbraced cabs. It seems more likely that a quantity of these early cabs were stored away at the factory, and then brought out for use after the factory began spinning riveted axles rather than crimping them. Roland and I are very lucky to have both found models from this later period with our early cabs on them. We can now verify they exist as a new variation, so now to your main question.......
Through the years Nick's listing have been updated in several ways. Years ago Nick would have added our new variation almost immediately. That is sometimes done now by moderators or Nick's "Helpers", but generally we now wait to update a particular model. After all Nick's codes and their details have been compared with other sources, all interested Forum members now have a chance to share any new data they can add. Our Forum discussions have brought out many new details to add, so usually a collector like Antonin will organize new codes and print them here before they are used to update Nick's Guide.
The quick old way seems much easier in looking back, but the frequent Guide changes were tough to do and keep up with. By studying each model alone now, all additions can be done at once to simplify re-coding by each collector. When will our 11B Tanker be studied next time around for our variation to be added? Will it be added? YES, Eventually..... :D
