29b Austin A55 Cambridge

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) has what appears to be a pre-production (or a fake!) as variation code 29-2A: no windows, full trim, MW, c/a. Variation code 29-2B is also interesting, having full trim, light or dark KGPW (probably 9 x 20, making it the equivalent of Nick's variation code 1) and either clear or green-tinted windows. The same windows are listed variation code 29-2C which has KSPW (probably 9 x 20) but is without trim to the rear bumper (making this Nick's variation code 3). Can any Member confirm clear windows on any variation of this model, or is this misidentification of very pale green, perhaps faded, windows? Variation code 29-2F is a later issue with third-type trim, but with "smooth GPW" implying a finer tread than the catalogued 9 x 24 (which is missing from the variations list). Finally variation code 29-2G is a BPW model with pale powder blue instead of pale green. I think most Members would accept that this is a sunfade rather than an ex-factory variation.
The AIM's “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) has the following note: "Very light green tinted windows may appear to be 'clear'. There are a number of shade variations of all models listed and this model, like No. 21 Milk Truck, fades to a light powder blue".
Neither Stannard nor Houghton catalogues any variations not already covered by Nick.
U.K. Matchbox did not examine the model.

There is not so much unlisted variatons. I have only one unlisted variation with SPW ø9x20 and thick rounded rear rivet post. Please check your models, I am sure you will find it also.

I think that there is a clear windons variation (anyway when you like, you can imagine a very little bit of green touch there)

Very nice photos Antonin, I have one with the very pale windows too (not traditional green tint and not quite clear :D ). Ignore the detailed model on the left, it came from a model railway.
