Late on this one, but the wooden peg marked 'Lionel' was provided with all Lionel O gauge locomotives that had pill-type smoke generators. It was used to clean out the residue that would build up on the inside of the smokestack.

Great lot, I found many like this over the years when buying Lionel train collections...
