Rain and cardboard do not mix!

Post by Viewfield »

After the torrential rain experienced in my part of the world this week I check my basement rooms for water damage which may be caused by water entering the the floor gullies due to overloading of the council rainwater system. (All equipped with non-return valves but you never know).

Everything appeared to be OK until I entered my "Toy Room"--- Wetness everywhere! A blocked fall pipe from the guttering had caused it to overflow exactly over the light shaft for the window. The light shaft filled up and bingo, water came in through the open window. (Left open a smidge for ventilation)

Main damage was caused to packing boxes containing a selection of books I used to read as a child (long ago!) I have a collection of annuals "Victor, Book for Boys" dating from 1966 complete to 1988. Some 15-20 have suffered water damage.

I have found that most of the damaged ones are available on EBay and the like.

Positive is, while unpacking the damaged boxes I came across various things I'd totally forgotten about:

Not die cast but still interesting!

Anyone got any "Victor Book for Boys" for sale?

I always use Addall for all my secondhand book searches.

Oh yes, Insured. Apparently this is "elementary damage" and carries a surcharge (Selbstbeteiligung) of € 3.500,00

Rod, it is important to get that room dry and aired as soon as possible because moisture in the air will continue to cause prolonged damage to more paper-card based products. Put a low power heater in there at a low setting just to keep the air warm.

that sucks man...sorry to hear this happened...couldve been worse...so think positive!
Please use a web hosting site (like photobucket) to store pictures so you can post them here, using attachments makes it hard to view the pictures when you have to scroll to see them. Seeing comparisons of models is hard to see with attachments too.

Rod, that is your worst nightmare, I hope you are able make your basement watertight as soon as possible, meantime get some heat in there to dry it out. Best of luck.

FYI, it's called an "excess" in English.
