31b Ford Fairlane Station Wagon

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) lists as variation 31-2A, a yellow model with red base and 9 x 24 SPW. Although there is a note which reads "body and/or roof colour may vary as to shades", variation 31-2D (red base, 9 x 20 SPW) is noted as coming in either light or dark metallic green. Finally variation 31-2H is listed as metallic silver green, beige top, red base, 9 x 24 SPW.
The AIM's “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) contains no variations not already listed by Nick, but does not that "fading will produce a cream/beige roof", which I think explains NAMC variation 31-2H.
Stannard has no new variations, and neither does Stannard.
U.K. Matchbox covered the model in Vo. 4, no. 5 (Dec. '80) p159, with a follow-up in Vol. 4, no. 6 (Feb. '81) p206. There is one variation not listed by Nick: yellow body, black base, clear windows, 9 x 24 GPW. (Could this perhaps be the same variation as the NAMC's 31-2A? If so, is it SPW or GPW?)

That is very clear, but I do find the difference in roof colour concerning. Are you sure that there is sunfading involved here, Antonin?

I am not sure about this, perhaps there were two shades of painting, similar to early and late cadillac

Having slept on it, I've realised that the colour of the metallic green top coat is inevitably influenced by the colour of the undercoat. If that undercoat were cream instead of pink, would that be enough to explain the observed difference in the metallic greens?

I would think so Hugh a base colour would affect the top coat
