Hi Dave,
Those pumps and scales are really familiar,I had the pumps years ago, but sorry I've no idea who made them. Atlas Phillips is lovely, original is amazing.
I love the HK Dinkys, and really want to put them with the Spot Ons, I've only got the Chevy, and a box for the Buick, but they're on the list, (isn't everything? )
Tel box is a great detail piece, I really want the pre war white one.

Prior to Chris's comment above about the existence of the Pre War White Telephone box I wasn't even aware of its existence. Scrolling through listings recently I cam across a group of signs, and two telephone boxes, one white, one red. The photo's weren't good so it wasn't clear whether the white one was a repaint or not. I took a punt and the result is below. The pre war lead content is doing its usual trick of cracking and expanding the casting, so there is a noticeable size difference, someone has tried to stabilise it with glue at some stage in the past, which seems to be working. Still not bad for nearly 80 years old.

All other items below arrived this week, I've been lucky lately buying lots with good items the majority of which are new items to my collection.









I'll leave Chris to give you the history on the White Telephone boxes.

I got the lot below locally. The gent I bought the 4 Merc's off bought them new with the entirety of his first apprentice pay check back in 1962, over 5 quid. Single owner until now. 1 Dinky and Three Tekno's. Tekno's in NZ are like hens teeth.

Finally, I came across a French Transporter with a price too good to ignore. I like these as they make displaying cars in a given space a lot easier.







This acquisition is actually in better condition than my existing version.





That's it for a week or two, whilst I await a couple more lots from the UK. One model obtained from Vectis's last auction I am particularly waiting for.

Another cracking crop of Dinky additions...cracking being the key word Here...

In real life the Cream phone box signifies an independent telephone network and presumably operated in areas separate from the main telephone network. I do not know if this is the reason behind the colouring of the Dinky version so it will be interesting to read Chris's description of the model.

More great models and those transporters are brilliant! I don't know, but the cream phone kiosk looks like the concrete version with red metal window frames unlike the all red cast iron version.

Great to see some more accessories! Hull had cream telephone boxes, but I am not sure that this is the reason for the cream/red Dinky version. The Dinky is modelled on the K6 telephone box (also named jubilee kiosk after King George V's silver jubilee in 1935 when it was introduced). They were usually red, but in some rural areas they were painted grey with red window bars, as some found the red too conspicuous! As John has written, the K1 and K3 boxes which were made in the 1920s were painted cream with red window bars, so Dinky may have had this in mind. The concrete K3 box is almost extinct nowadays, but looked similar to the K2 boxes which can still be seen in London (these are the slightly larger boxes with 18 equal-sized windowpanes on the sides).

I have read some discussion as to whether the size difference is due to fatigue or if the dies changed, and I'm not sure which is correct. My cream box is slightly larger than my post-war examples. I have a red box which seems to be prewar. It has less fatigue than the cream one, but is the same size. Usually the pre-war red boxes have black window bars (I can't find any reference to the real ones being painted this way), but my example has plain silver windows with no highlighting of the bars. The paint looks original to me, but perhaps there has been some repainting?

Post-war telephone boxes have red window bars, but again I have an example with no highlighting of the bars, which doesn't look like a repaint. I can't find any reference to this variation, but I have seen the odd photo of telephone boxes with plain silver windows, including one of a filled trade box. Can anyone supply more information on this?

Looks like you have a wheel variation on your French Dinky transporter trailers. Interesting to see how the decals have discoloured on one but not the other. British Dinkies of the time managed to avoid this problem by using printing or spirit-based decals.

I've just noticed that your Corsair is the Fun A'hoy gift set version with (rather small) driver.

Hi all,

I always thought that the Pre War cream / white Dinky box was a model of the Hull telephone box. When the Post Office formed the GPO Telephones network the City of Kingston upon Hull already had it's own private wire network, and had no wish to join the GPO. Thus their phone boxes were painted cream.
I may well be wrong though, and cream boxes may have been used elsewhere?
Pre War and Post War these were all made from the same die set, the growth in size is due to good old fatigue, my Pre War box stands a good 1/4" taller than my Post War one.
